You must have:

Mathematical Formulae and Statistical Tables (Blue), calculator [~•~ru)
Candidates may use any calculator permitted by Pearson regulations.
Calculators must not have the facility for symbolic algebra manipulation,
differentiation and integration, or have retrievable mathematical
formulae stored in them.
Instructions
• Use black ink or ball-point pen.
• ff pencil is used for diagrams/sketches/graphs it must be dark (HB or B).

labelled.
• Answer the questions in the spaces provided
- there may be more space than you need.
• You should show sufficient working to make your methods clear.
Answers without working may not gain full credit.
• Whenever a numerical value of g is required, take g = 9.8 m s-2, and give your
answer to either 2 significant figures or 3 significant figures.
Information
• A booklet 'Mathematical Formulae and Statistical Tables' is provided.
• There are 7 questions in this question paper. The total mark for this paper is 75.
• The marks for each question are shown in brackets
- use this as a guide as to how much time to spend on each question.
Advice
• Read each question carefully before you start to answer it.

Two identical small rings, A and 8 , each of mass m, are threaded onto a rough horizontal
Mre. The rings are connected by a light inextensible string. A particle C of mass 3m is
attached to the midpoint of the string. The particle C hangs in equilibrium below the Mre
with angle BAC == p, as shown in Figure 2.

The tension in each of the parts, AC and BC, of the string is T

(2)
(a) By considering particle C, find Tin tenns of m, g and P

(b) Find, in terms of m and g, the magnitude of the normal reaction between the Mre

The coefficient of friction between each ring and the wire is 5

The two rings, A and B, are on the point of sliding along the Mre towards each other

- 5. A car travels at a constant speed of 40 ms-1 in a straight Iine along a horizontal racetrack .
Leave
blank

At time t == 0, the car passes a motorcyclist who is at rest. The motorcyclist immediately
sets off to catch up with the car.
2
The motorcyclist accelerates at 4 ms-2 for 15 s and then accelerates at I ms- for a further
T seconds until he catches up with the car.

(a) Sketch, on the same axes, the speed-time graph for the motion of the car and the
speed-time graph for the motion of the motorcyclist, from time t == 0 to the instant
when the motorcyclist catches up with the car.
(2)

At the instant when t == 1 seconds, the car and the motorcyclist are moving at the same
1
speed.

(b) Find the value of 11
