 II. ESSAY
Hunger and Corruption; Source of Destitution

In my community, the culture of Poverty and Corruption is rampant, from the government officials going
to the high-positioned people sitting in government related agencies. In my case, I experienced not
being able to eat thrice a day, due to some circumstances involve like lacking financially one of the
causes is corruption.

What I find questionable enough is the issue with the Government employees Christmas bonuses, when
our mayor sat on office last 6 years ago, ever since then they have not been able to received Christmas
bonuses. My mother is one of the employees of our Municipality and since then, she was not able to
receive any of that money which should have been for my tuition and yet, until now, they are deprived
from their right. Another experience occurred with my sister, she was once receiving allowance from the
Municipality funded by the Congressman and each scholar was given a voucher to sign, but the problem
is there was no amount specified and then, after signing they only gave 1000 pesos and as many
scholars complained of what happened, news spread that the money should have been 3000 pesos
announced by the Congressman and by that time, I learned that the Culture of Corruption has been in
our community for so long already because as what I learned from experiences of my family. The current
mayor’s family has been sitting in the office for years already and who knows how many times it
happened.

Issues about this is not new in our community, depriving scholars from their right to vote or else they
will be removed from the list of scholars. It was exploited on the radio back then, you see for my family
hunger is not new for especially when the sugarcane season ends, it’s our source of income and for the
season end, we will not be able eat sometimes and just drank water, countless of debt has bundled up,
just so we could finish college or the school year. Being in a middle-class family has not been easy, but it
also not hard, I am privileged enough to be able to go to a catholic Institution all my life, while some
struggle to afford it, I saw one of my classmates struggling with paying our tuition fees and not able to
buy new shoes, kindly enough the essence of giving is still present, me and my classmates gave money
for him to buy new shoes and in that way, it is already a small kind of giving back even as a scholar,
allowance was then shouldered by two of our teachers.

Which is why I think if we are able to hold hand in hand, united as one, we will be able to have a society
free from these problems and have people happy to join in different programs by our government
without thinking that its ids a new gimmick, for the election to come.
