(Constellation: Pattern in the Sky)

I. Objectives

Content Standard: The relationship between the visible constellation in the sky and Earth’s
position along its orbit.
Performance Standard: Discuss whether or not popular beliefs and practices with regard to
constellations and astrology have a scientific basis.
Learning Competencies: Show which constellations may be observed at different times of
the year using models. S9ES-IIIj-35

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to;


1. Learn about the different seasonal constellations, their names, and their
significance,
2. Apply their creativity by designing their own seasonal constellation
using various materials and techniques, and
3. Collaborate with teams to design constellations, share ideas, and work
together to come up with a final design.

II. Subject Matter:


a. Topic: Constellation: Patterns in the Sky (Activity)
b. Reference: Learner’s Material pages/SLM
Science 9 Quarter 3 – Module 5 pp. 1-20
c. Materials:
For the teacher:
 Smart TV (PowerPoint Presentation)
 Laptop

For the students:


 Pictures of constellations
 Art materials such as cardboard, scissors, glue, and colored paper
 Chart paper and markers

d. Time Allotment: 60 minutes

III. Lesson Procedure:

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Classroom standards
4. Checking of Attendance

B. Presentation
 The teacher will present and explain the activity by showing some pictures.

C. Application
#Seasonal Constellation Design Challenge!

Introduction: A constellation is a recognizable pattern of stars in the night sky.


Bring the night sky inside by creating constellations with a light source.

Materials:
 Writing Utensil
 Recycled Material: Be creative! We recommend cardboard/black.
construction paper/ plastic containers, or even a paper plate!
*Make sure the material is at least 8 inches x 8 inches for this project
 Hole Punch
* Anything to poke a hole for your stars will work, like a nail, scissors,
or a pencil.
*Some adult assistance may be required
 Yellow yema wrapper

Build:
 Research about Seasonal constellation model.
 Mark the location for the stars with a writing utensil on your base.
material.
 Use a hole punch/pencil or scissors to create space for the light to
shine through.
*Some adult assistance is required.
 Cover it with a yema wrapper to make your pattern visible.
 Write a short description of the constellation you have chosen.
*You can choose your Zodiac Constellation.

D. Evaluation

 Each group will present and explain their output in front of the class.
 Evaluate the students’ output using rubrics based on their work.
 Assess the models created by the students and their ability to explain the
significance of the constellations.

E. Assignment

Observe the night sky at home and track the movement of constellations over time.
