As the Philippines prepares for elections in 2022, may be the most divided and contested

vote for the country's highest governmental office. It's a high-stakes, high-risk race, with top
contenders for the office and their supporters putting great pressure on them to win. Focusing
on the top two candidates, the campaign is between defeating one seeking a return to power
and electing one seeking a major power shift in government. We have the opportunity to
reflect on our own country's leadership. Those who believe they can do everything they want
while in power will face the same restricted truth. Sure, they might be able to hang on to
power for a few more years. However, democratic leadership has a beginning and an end in
this country. Nothing lasts forever. While our high-ranking officials frequently get away with
crimes committed while in office, and our judiciary may not be the most effective, these
factors should not deter us from using judicial mechanisms to demand justice in its true sense,
not just justice in terms of words, propaganda, and strategies. It is a time for us who are fresh
voters to reflect on the conclusion, continuation, or beginning of visions and actions that we
have individually selected for our society—whether or not they are conscious of past lessons,
responsive to current needs, and accountable for future consequences. For politicians, now is
the time to consider the legacy they wish to leave to society, as well as the weight of duty
they face in shaping their fellow citizens' present and future.
Elections are much more than electing or removing candidates from office. It's not just about
changing names and faces here. Power is transferred and legitimized through elections.
Traditional politics must be abandoned. Political parties will not be able to successfully
control public space until they undergo meaningful transformation. Instead of focusing on the
potential that await the next President, we concentrate on the critical concerns and duties that
must be addressed. A lot happened during the election that disappointed me. I'm disappointed
since so many people voted for a senator, and I'm not sure what can be done to improve our
country's legal system. I have no idea what will happen in the next 6 years, which is awful.
The winner's announced, there's nothing we can do about it.
