1} Singapore becomes part of Malaysia - Singapore History

2)https://theknowledgecafeteria.wordpress.com/2012/09/15/reasons-for-merger-with-malaya

There are multiple reasons for the merger to happen. Firstly, Singapore needed financial
support by having a bigger common market from Malaysia to create more jobs and grow
economically as Singapore does not have any natural resources.

Secondly, communism was an important reason for the merger. The PAP was weakened
due to several members betraying it and joining the communists and due to PAP being the
only a part of the majority party in the Parliament, all constituencies was difficult to pass and
there was lots of competition. Most of the efforts were put into fighting the communists and
oppositions parties instead of developing the country. So, the Merger was absolutely crucial
to the future of Singapore and was a necessary step to take.

Thirdly, Singapore needed to have independence from the British. The British were unwilling
to relinquish self-governance to Singapore as they felt that Singapore did not have a leader
capable enough to lead the country out of the crisis. So, the British agreed that if Singapore
merged with Malaysia, they would give them self-governance as the British believed that
Malaysia would help lead Singapore out from its crisis with the necessary leadership.

Singapore would also gain protection through the merger. Since Singapore was a tiny island
surrounded by larger countries, the chance of invasion was likely. The merger would be able
to deter potential invaders such as the communists.
