Pair assignment: Written essay: 100 marks

1) Topics: The press theory applied in Malaysia


- Based on the topic, each group must choose one controversial national issue and collect minimum 10 news, maximum
20 news from mainstream or alternative English newspaper and comment on:
i) the press theory applied in Malaysia;
ii) how did the press theory influence the function of Malaysian newspapers;
iii) how did the press theory influence the news writing style of Malaysian newspapers;
iv) how did the press theory influence the freedom of speech in Malaysia;

Objective: The objective of the assignment is to expose students to the impact of press theory toward functions, news
writing style and freedom of speech in Malaysian newspapers.

Deadline:
Date: Week 7

PENALTIES
 For late submission, there will be a reduction of absolute marks from the mark’s score submitted:

 Late 1 to 3 days after deadline of submission: minus 10 marks;


 Late 4 to 7 days after deadline of submission: minus 20 marks;
 Late more than 7 days after deadline of submission: 0 marks
 Exceptions will be made in the case of illness or accidents or death of immediate family members. But
students must provide relevant documentation to the lecturer in charge.

Format:
1. Use Times New Romans with font size 12 and double spacing.
2. The report should include cover page (include assessment criteria), the news and references.
3. The report should use only normal plain A-4-sized paper.
4. For the cover page, use only normal plain A4-sized paper. Do not put plastic cover on it.
5. Include your name, tutorial groups and lecturer’s/ tutors’ name.
6. Include the assessment criteria on the cover page as the following:
