Teaching Plan

TOPIC: Major noncommunicable disease awareness: Asthma

PURPOSE: Draw out knowledge and awareness through the education process in the health
education of a friend.

GOAL: Draw out knowledge and awareness through the education process in health education
on how to control asthma among individuals.

VENUE: Personal Home

LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the end of the health education class, the participant shall be able
to:
1. Identify signs and symptoms of Asthma.
2. Acquire necessary knowledge and display an effective breathing pattern evidenced by a
respiratory rate.
3. Carry out information on the control of Asthma.

CONTENT OUTLINE
Asthma
 It is a major noncommunicable disease (NCD) affecting children and adults and is the
most common chronic disease among children. It cannot be cured. (WHO)
 It is the inflammation of the air passage which results in the tightening of chest muscles
and air passages called bronchospasm.
Causes of Asthma
 Genes – Asthma is more likely if other family members also have asthma – particularly a
close relative, such as a parent or sibling.
 Viral Infections –Viral infections occur when a virus enters the body and successfully
takes over a host cell to begin the process of replicating.
 Allergies – Allergies occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance
 Environment – the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or
operates
Signs and Symptoms of Asthma

 cause symptoms such as difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath,


and difficulty performing normal daily activities. Other symptoms of an asthma attack
include:
o Severe wheezing when breathing both in and out
o Coughing that won't stop
o Very rapid breathing
o Chest pain or pressure
o Tightened neck and chest muscles, called retractions
o Difficulty talking
o Feelings of anxiety or panic
o Pale, sweaty face
o Blue lips or fingernails
Transmission of Asthma
 Asthma is not transmissible in other people but can be acquired through genetics or
environmental factors.
Control of Asthma/ Preventive Medications
 Inhaler
 Tablets such as steroid tablets
 Liquid such as nebulizer
 Shot Such as injections help the immune system build up a tolerance to substances that
trigger symptoms
Teaching Methodologies

Method 1: I would discuss the information about Asthma in a manner that the participant will
understand and gain knowledge about it.

Time Frame: 15- 20 minutes

Methods of Evaluation:
 Implementation of an Oral Quiz composed of 10 enumeration or identification questions.
