Low Voltage vs Medium VFDs

Questions and Answers

Q1. How do you know what type of transformer is required? (Isolation vs regular step down)

A1. In general, if the following apply, an isolation transformer is required.

1) Supply transformer is something other than delta/wye connection.
2) There are large DC drives or ARC furnaces on the line
3) The power supply has > 5% waveform distortion.
For any specific application, it is ultimately the responsibility of the electrical design engineer as they have
full information regarding the complete electrical system.

Q2. Will we test a transformer and VFD combination in the factory?

A2. We will have to review this on a case by case basis.

Q3. Can we share these slides? Are there any standard disclaimers that should be included.

A3. Chiller marketing will select specific slides for use with customers and place them on HVAC Partners.
Disclaimer for PowerPoint file. “This presentation is provided for informational and marketing purposes

the products of Carrier Corporation or those of any third party.”

Q4. Do we have a 575V unit mounted VFD?

A4. We do have a 575V unit mounted VFD. You must select VFD with active rectifier in the program and
the motor RLA limit is 390 amps.

Q5. How can a sales person get transformer selections and pricing?

A5. Contact Chiller Marketing for an ETO on the transformer and disconnect gear. We work with the
VFD vendor to ensure a coordinated package. Be sure to advise if the transformer is going to be placed
inside or outside and if it should have copper or aluminum windings. The disconnect gear must always
be placed indoors.
