Course Title: Introduction to Physics
Course No: PHY 101

Fig. 1 (Problem 1. a) Fig. 2 (a & b)

1. Three horizontal ropes pull on a large stone stuck in the ground, producing the vector
forces ⃗⃗⃗
𝐴 ,𝐵⃗ and ⃗⃗⃗
𝐶 shown in Fig. 1.
(a) (5 Marks) Find the magnitude and direction of vector 𝑅⃗, where (2𝐴⃗⃗⃗ − 𝐵 ⃗⃗⃗ ) = 0.
⃗ ) − (𝑅⃗ + 5𝐶

(b) (3 marks) Draw two vector with co-ordinate (-3, 4) and (2, 5) in XY co-ordinate and show the
addition and subtraction of that two vectors in drawing.
(c) (3 Marks) A ball is moving with velocity 28 m/s. Its velocity is decreasing. It travels 96 m
before stopping. Calculate the time to stop and acceleration of the ball.

2. A block of mass 𝑚 = 1.25 is pulled along a rough horizontal surface by a constant applied force of
magnitude 𝐹1 = 12 𝑁 that acts at an angle 𝜃 = 32° to the horizontal, as indicated in Fig. 2. The
acceleration of the block is 𝑎 = 5.3 𝑚𝑠 −2 .
(a) (2 Marks) Draw a complete force free body diagram of the block.
(b) (4 Marks) Find the coefficient of kinetic friction of the surface.
(c) (3 Marks) A ball is thrown upward with velocity 10m/s from a height of 12 m. What will be
the final velocity of the ball before hitting the ground? Calculate the maximum height.
