Design and Construction of Conventional (Drilling and Blast) Tunneling - An

Introductory Course

Chungsik Yoo

Vice President, International Geosynthetics Society

Chair Professor, School of Civil and Architectural Engineering, Landscape Architecture
Sungkyunkwan University, Korea (csyoo@skku.edu)

In this course, fundamentals of design and construction of conventional tunneling will be discussed.
General principles of routine tunnel design including rock classification will first be discussed.
Principles of support and excavation design of a tunnel will then be followed with emphasis on practical
issues. Also to discussed is the use of geosynthetics in tunnels. Fundamentals of drainage and
waterproofing in transportation as well as hydraulic tunnels will be given together with the geosynthetic
filter design principles and their applicability to the tunnel drainage/filter design. The effect of
deterioration of tunnel drainage system on the structural performance of tunnel lining will also be
discussed with illustrative example tunnel problems.
