SERVICE LETTER
OF THE CESSNA SHIELD

May 3, 1974

AV74-6

SUBJECT: REDUCTION OF FM INTERFERENCE IN CESSNA 300 SERIES NAV/COM

AVIONICS AFFECTED: 300 Series Nav/Com Units (Type RT-308C, RT-328C and RT-528E)
installed in Cessna Single and Multi-Engine aircraft. (Specific serial
numbers of aircraft affected are provided in the REMARKS section
of this Service Letter.)

REASON FOR LETTER:

Avionic Service Letters AV74-1 and AV74-4 with attached ARC Service Bulletins #156
and #164A announced the recent MS-1 modification for reducing spurious re-radiation
in 300 Series Nav/Coms. An added benefit of the MS-1 modification was the reduction
of FM radio interference.

Listed below are two additional changes which can be incorporated to further reduce the
FM interference level in the 300 Series Nav/Com. It should be noted that the degree of
FM radio interference will vary considerably depending upon the frequencies involved and
the proximity and power output of the FM radio station.

1. SQUELCH CONTROL IMPROVEMENT ... . RT-308C, RT-328C and RT-528E

The attached ARC Bulletin #162 describes changes which have been made to the
squelch circuits and to the COM section of the 300 Nav/Com to improve squelching
of high-level noises. (Reference ARC Bulletin #162 for affected Nav/Com serials.)

2. ADF FILTER .......... . . . .... 300/400 Series ADF's used

with 300 Series Nav/Com's
installed in Cessna Single Engine
and Skymaster series aircraft.
To prevent the ADF sense antenna from contributing to FM interference, a filter
(P/N 43718 RF Filter) is being installed (on an "as required" basis) on the sense
antenna lead-in. (Reference ARC Bulletin #170, attached.)
NOTE: All 310, 340, and 400 series aircraft incorporate an ADF Filter as standard equipment,
and are not affected by this change.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:

It is recommended that the above improvements be made to 300 Nav/Coms now in service
where FM radio interference is a problem.

Subject: Improved Squelch Operation (noise reduction) and Simplified COM Receiver
Adjustments for Cessna 300 NAV/COM (Types RT-308C/328C/528E).

EFFECTIVITY:

1. Type RT-308C S/N 2549 and below.

2. Type RT-328C S/N 5949 and below.
3. Type RT-528E S/N 1049 and below.

PRIORITY:

As required.

The following changes are recommended to improve squelch operation (noise reduction),
and to simplify receiver adjustments in the COM section of the subject units. These
changes should be particularly beneficial toward squelching high-level noises which
adversely affect COM reception during flights near highly-industrialized areas. The
recommended changes are designated as modification M2 for the subject NAV/COM units.

RECOMMENDED CHANGES:

The recommended changes involve installing a resistor in parallel with resistor A1R183,
together with performing revised (simplified) adjustment procedures for AGC Delay,
IF Level, Squelch Range, and COM Audio (Phone) in the COM section of the Al Receiver/
Converter Assembly.

B. Procedures:

1. Install new resistor ARC P/N 00200-06820, 6.8K ohms +10%, fixed, comp., ¼W,
per the following procedures. The new resistor is to be installed on the
component side of the Al assembly, electrically in parallel with resistor
AlR183. There is no need to remove the Al assembly during incorporation of
this change.

a. Remove cover over the Al Receiver/Converter Assembly.

b. Temporarily remove transistor A1Q8 from its socket, for better access
to resistor A1R183. A1Q8 is located on left rear corner area of Al
assembly.

c. Install new resistor by "bridging" it between the long exposed lead

of resistor A1R183 (10K ohms) and the long exposed lead of inductor
A1L14 (680uH). A1R183 and A1L14 are located approximately ½ inch
inboard of transistor A1Q8. Keep the leads of the new resistor as
short as possible, and solder the leads approximately midway down on
the long exposed lead of A1R183 and AlL14. The solder connections
must be electrically and mechanically perfect to avoid fracturing of
the connections due to vibration. Position the new resistor such that
it will not interfere with the adjustment of AGC DELAY control (A1R58).
NOTE: Units modified at the factory will have A1R183 10K ohms resistor
replaced by one of 3.9K ohms, with a few units containing the
6.8K ohms resistor shunted across the 10K ohms resistor.

CAUTION: During soldering, ensure that all of the wires in the area
will not be affected by the heat of the soldering iron,
including the small brown wire that may be positioned against
the long exposed lead of inductor A1L14.

d. Re-install transistor A1Q8, removed per step 1.b above.

2. Perform revised COM receiver adjustments on subject unit, as follows:

a. Perform bench test hook-up of the subject unit.

b. Verify primary input voltage at external connector J3 pin Z is 13.75

+0.5 Vdc.
Page 3 FIELD ENGINEERING SERVICE BULLETIN # 162

c. Turn ON-OFF/VOL control to ON, and allow minimum 5-minute warm up.

d. Perform preliminary test set-up of subject NAV/COM unit, as follows:

2nd IF LEVEL control (R184 on Al assy.) full CW

AGC DELAY control (R58 on Al assy.) full CW
SQUELCH RANGE control (R187 on Al assy.) full CW
SQ control (front panel) full CW
ON-OFF/VOL control (front panel) full CW

Apply VHF signal generator output of 126.50 MHz, 30%

1000 Hz modulation, to external COM antenna connector J2.

e. With modulated 126.50 MHz signal input level at 100uv, adjust AGC
DELAY control (A1R58) for -10Vdc at anode of audio detector A1
CR19. Adjustment limits: -9 to -10Vdc.

f. With signal input level at 5uv, adjust 2nd IF LEVEL control (A1R184)
for -5Vdc at anode of audio detector A1 CR19. Adjustment limits:
-2 to -6Vdc.

g. With signal input level at 100uv, verify voltage at A1 CR19 anode

is still within limits of -9 to -10Vdc, per step 2.e above. If
not, re-adjust AGC DELAY control (A1R58) to bring voltage within
limits.

h. With signal input level at 20uv, and SQ control (front panel) full
CCW, adjust SQUELCH RANGE control (A1R187) until squelch partially
opens. Adjustment limits: squelch threshold must occur with signal
input level between 15uv and 25uv.

i. Set the SQ control (front panel) to full CW. With no signal applied,
the audio output must not be squelched.

j. With signal input level at 20uv, adjust COM AUDIO RANGE control
(A1R136) for 5.0 ±0.5 Vac phone output across 250-ohm load.

NOTE: This step completes the simplified COM receiver adjustments

for AGC Delay, IF Gain, Squelch Range, and COM Audio (Phone).
These simplified procedures are to be used in lieu of those
in the current Service/Parts Manuals for the subject units.
However, they are to be used only for NAV/COM units modified
per this Bulletin, and for those subject Types RT-308C/328C/
528E modified at the factory (S/N higher than listed in this
Bulletin).

3. After re-installation of the cover over the A1 assembly, perform functional

bench test to verify proper operation of Nav/Com functions.
Page 4 FIELD ENGINEERING SERVICE BULLETIN # 162

NOTE: Attach a blank inspection sticker decal on the NAV/COM unit at or

near the unit nameplate. Make entry on decal, as follows:

FESB 162 for Types RT-308C/328C/528E.

MOD M2

4. After re-installation of subject unit into aircraft, perform functional

ground check (with engines running) to verify proper ground operation of
Nav/Com functions.

5. The customer should perform a functional flight test to verify proper

operation of all Nav/Com functions.

Subject: RF Filter to Prevent Spurious Re-Radiation of VHF COM and FM

Broadcast Transmissions by the ADF Sense Antenna.

EFFECTIVITY:

Cessna 300 and 400 ADF (Types R-546A/346A) installations in Cessna single-engine
aircraft only.

PRIORITY:

As required.

GENERAL:

Due to the ADF/COM antennae configuration, the ADF "sense" antenna may pick up
the aircraft VHF COM transmissions and re-radiate them at the same frequency or
at a different frequency (harmonic). The pilot is unaware of this condition until
he gets a squawk from an Air Traffic Controller, notifying him that he is trans-
mitting on other frequencies in addition to the selected COM frequency. In
addition, the ADF "sense" antenna may also pick up FM Broadcast (88 - 108 MHz)
transmissions and re-radiate them onto the COM antenna, thereby causing FM inter-
ference in the COM receiver.

A low cost, low-pass RF Filter, ARC P/N 43718, has been designed to prevent the
spurious re-radiation of VHF COM and FM Broadcast transmissions by the ADF "sense"
antenna. This filter is installed in-line with the ADF "sense" antenna, per the
following PROCEDURES. The filter is available from ARC-Boonton.

NOTE: Disregard this bulletin and do not install the subject RF Filter if the ADF
installation contains an RF Signal Limiter, ARC P/N 41376. The Filter
circuitry is already an integral part of the RF Signal Limiter. The limiter,
if installed (optional), is connected directly to the "sense" antenna
connector at the rear of the ADF receiver mounting assembly, externally.

PROCEDURES:

1. Disconnect the ADF "sense" antenna lead-in at the rear of the receiver mounting
assembly.

DIVISION OF Cessna AIRCRAFT COMPANY BOONTON, N.J. 07005
Telephone (201) 3 34- 1800 Cable ARC RADIO
Page 2 FIELD ENGINEERING SERVICE BULLETIN # 170

2. Install RF filter by connecting it between the "sense" antenna lead-in and

receiver mounting assembly. Observe required polarity of filter connection,
as marked on the filter. The 5-inch segment of shielded cable (supplied with
filter) is to be installed between the filter and the receiver mounting assembly.

NOTE: It will be necessary to use a right-angle BNC adapter at the mounting

assembly connection for those installations which have insufficient
clearance to accommodate the minimum-allowable bend radius (1.5 inches)
of the shielded cable.

3. Secure the filter with appropriate clamping, to prevent dangling.

4. Perform functional ground check of ADF system to verify proper ground operation.

5. Make entry in Aircraft Log Book, noting compliance with ARC Service Bulletin
# 170 for preventing spurious re-radiation of VHF COM and FM Broadcast
transmissions.

6. The customer should perform a functional flight test to verify proper flight
operation of the ADF system, and no spurious re-radiation of COM transmissions.
