 Religion, Tradition & Legends
Polish people are mostly Catholics,
so many traditions, like decorating
Christmas tree or painting eggs for
Easter, are connected to it. But
there are also more unique
customs, for example drowning big
puppet called „Marzanna” – it
takes place on 21𝑠𝑡 of March and
celebrate the end of winter.
Another spring tradition is „śmigus –
dyngus” on Easter Monday. It’s
about pouring water on other
people. This day is always very
funny.
Polish culture is full of legends, usually connected
with old cities. I’ll show you a story about the
beginning of Poland.
A legend about Lech, Czech and Rus.
There were three brothers: Lech, Czech and Rus.
Someday, they decided to go and find a new place
to live. Suddenly, they saw a big white eagle in a
nest with sunset in the background. Lech thought,
that it’s a sign for him and settle there. He named
new village Gniezno (in polish „gniazdo” means nest)
and took an eagle as a symbol. Czech went to
south, and Rus went to east, where they made their
countries: Czech Republic and Russia. Lech’s village
grew up and become first capital of Poland.
 Food
Polish kitchen contains things, which were
easy to get in Poland in past ages – like
potatoes, wheat, meat, eggs, mushrooms
and cabbage. Here are some of polish
typical dishes:
❖ Pierogi – a kind of dumplings. They have
different fillings, for example meat,
cabbage with mushrooms, white cheese,
blueberries or „russian” – potatoes,
cheese and onion mixed together.
❖ Pickled cucambers – cucambers in jar
with garlic, salt, dill, horseradish and
water, kept for 2 weeks. People from
other countries often think, that they are
uneatable, but that’s not true!
