At the Our Cabaña center in Mexico, there is a special World Thinking Day program. Young women can stay for
8 nights and be involved in the World Thinking Day celebrations. Included in the price is a fantastic trip to
explore the rich culture and traditions and wild nature in the Cuernavaca nature reserve (which means “near the
woods”) in the far south of Mexico. The price includes all transportation and meals, as well as a special badge
and any project materials. All this for only $1,100 USD. Two things you have to take if you aren’t a girl guide is
your own food and sleeping bag.

M Read the article about last names. Circle True or False for each statement.

Your last name comes from your parents, right? But did you know that about 1000 years ago, there were not
many people with a last name? That’s amazing.

Most people now have at least one first name and a last name, so where do our last names come from?

Some names relate to places, so we think that is where people came from or whose names come from
geographical features. For example, a person with the name William York probably lived in the city of York.
The British Royal Family’s last name is Windsor because they lived and still live in the town of Windsor. Also, a
person whose last name is Cliff probably lived near a cliff, or someone named Rivers, probably lived near a river
or traveled on a river. Other last names may relate to jobs. So, Tom Baker probably means there was a baker in his
family in the past. And the same for last names like Cook, Gardener and Smith. Then there are others that clearly
mean “the son of” such as: Jackson (son of Jack), Johnson (son of John). The ending “-ez” in Spanish means “son
of”, so Hernandez means the son of Hernando and so on. Can you think of anyone famous with these names?

It’s interesting to find out more about the history of your family’s last name. Where can you go to do this? The
first place is on the Internet, of course. But remember to ask your parents and grandparents and also check out
your local library. Once you have some names for your family tree, it’s a good idea to use a free website online to
write down all the names. Sometimes you find out some amazing connections with famous people. So, maybe
you have someone famous in your family! What are you waiting for?

1 Not everyone had a last name 1000 years ago. True / False
2 Some last names come from jobs people did in the past. True / False
3 Some last names mean “father of.” True / False
4 The local library can help you find out more about your last name. True / False
5 Everyone has a famous person in their family. True / False
