3.Mr and Mrs Smith had both the dominant alleles and the recessive alleles. Some of these alleles were
expressed for different traits but because some of these traits were either dominant while others were
recessive. They produced some offspring who inherited the dominant alleles and some recessive alleles.
The pedigree of Mr and Mrs Smith has also revealed through a Punnett square that the probability that
this couple will that will phenotypically resemble either of the parent is 50% with a ratio 1:1.

PART B

TOPIC A

IN VITRO FERTILIZATION –

In vitro (Latin for "in glass") fertilization, often known as IVF, is a type of assisted reproduction
in which an egg and sperm are united outside the body. A woman's ovulatory cycle is observed
and stimulated during this procedure, and an egg or eggs are removed from her ovaries and
allowed to be fertilized by sperm lab. The combination of the sperm and the egg is often done
through electrical current.

GENETIC SCREENING –

This is used to check for any genetic markers for illness, it is similar to scanning a person's

DNA. This type of public health effort offers persons who have been classified as high risk but
do not exhibit any symptoms prevention, early treatment, or reproductive options. Recruitment
strategies, teaching and counseling, scheduling of screening, test predictiveness, treatments, and
the existence of supervision systems and safeguards are all part of the design and execution.
To examine a group or subgroup for any prospective diseases that may not yet be present but
have the potential to proliferate and wreak havoc over the whole community in the future, a
population is utilized.
(Hartwell et. al, 2008)

I personally would recommend GENE THERAPY.

WHAT IS GENE THERAPY?

This method is used to heal or prevent disease. Gene therapy might be used to restore a
protein that has been missing or dysfunctional as a consequence of a gene mutation, which is a
permanent change in the DNA sequence.

HOW SAFE IS GENE THERAPY?

Gene therapy is not yet at its safest, despite ongoing research efforts and several clinical studies. There
are still several health concerns associated with gene therapy, including cancer, viruses accidentally
targeting the wrong cells, and inflammation. Although it is dangerous.

TOPIC B

Scientists especially Canadians have made tremendous impacts in the study of genetics all over the
world. Universities and research laboratories in Toronto and other states in Canada have also
contributed to the knowledge of genetics.

Around May 2010, a research team led by Brendan Frey and Benjamin Blencowe, in the University of
Toronto, unraveled a genetic code that helps explain how we complex organisms, can be found in a
small number of genes.

The discovery helps us to understand how to predict or prevent diseases such as cancer and
neurodegenerative disorders. The research was supported by the Government of Canada through
Genome Canada and the Ontario Genomics Institute.

“To figure out how living cells generate vast diversity in their genetic information, Frey and postdoctoral
fellow Yoseph Barash developed a new computer-assisted biological analysis method that finds
'codewords' hidden within the genome that constitute what is referred to as a 'splicing code'.”
