I. OBJECTIVES

A. Content Standard The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of random variables
and probability distributions.

B. Performance Standard The learner is able to apply an appropriate random variable for a given real-life
problem (such as in decision making and games of chance).

C. Learning Competencies/ The learners:

Objectives. (Write the LC Illustrates the mean and variance of a discrete random variable.
code for each) M11/12SP-IIIb-1
Specific Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
● illustrate and calculate the mean of a discrete random variable;
● interpret the mean of a discrete random variable; and
● solve problems involving mean of probability distributions.

B. Establishing a purpose Mean can be used in many ways, for example if there are 10 people going to a
for the lesson ( ENGAGE) mall we can determine what is the average number of items they buy.
C. Presenting Examples/ Present sigma notation and its meaning. Review them how to add sequence of
instances of the new numbers and let them know that sigma notation is used in symbolizing the sum
lesson(Pre-activity) of a sequence. Review them how do we solve the mean in each situation.

Consider rolling a die. What is the average number of spots that would appear?

concepts and practicing Construct the probability distribution for the random variable X representing
new skills #1 (EXPLORE) the number of spots that would appear

Step 2.
Multiply the value of the random variable X by the corresponding probability.

Step 3:
Add the results obtained in Step 2.

The mean tells us the average number of spots that would appear in a roll of a
die. So, the average number of spots that would appear is 3.5.

Although the die will never show a number, which is 3.5, this implies that
rolling the die many times, the theoretical mean would be 3.5.

Assessment 3) The mean of a random variable with a discrete probability distribution is:
(EXPLAIN) μ= X_1∙P(X_1 )+X_2∙P(X_2 )+ X_3∙P(X_3 )+⋯,+X_n∙P(X_n ) or μ= ∑▒X∙P(X)
