Frank Ocean is a musician, singer, and song-
writer who has been captivating audiences
with his unique style of music and deeply per-
sonal lyrics since he first burst onto the scene in
Ocean’s influence on modern music cannot
be overstated. His willingness to be vulnerable
and authentic in his music has inspired count-
less artists, and his unique sound has paved

2011. Born Christopher Edwin Breaux in Long
Beach, California in 1987, he adopted the
name Frank Ocean when he began his music
career.
Ocean first gained recognition as a member
of the hip-hop collective Odd Future, but it was
his mixtape “Nostalgia, Ultra” that really put
him on the map. The mixtape, which was re-
leased in 2011, was a critical and commercial
success and showcased Ocean’s exceptional
songwriting and vocal talents.
Since then, Ocean has released two studio al-
bums: “Channel Orange” in 2012 and “Blonde”
the way for a new generation of musicians. He
has been compared to icons such as Prince
and Stevie Wonder for his ability to seamlessly
blend different genres and create music that is
both innovative and timeless.
Frank Ocean is a true artist who has left an
indelible mark on the music industry. His ability
to connect with listeners on a deep emotional
level through his music is a testament to his
talent as a songwriter and performer. Despite
his reclusiveness, he has become a beloved
figure among music fans and continues to be
a major influence on modern music.

For this project, I have chosen an original song
titled “Pyramids” by Frank Ocean. The track
was produced for his debut album, Channel
Orange, and was issued as a single on June 7,
2012, with the album following roughly a month
later on July 10, 2012. As a devoted admirer of
Frank Ocean’s music, I have been captivated
by his discography, from unreleased demos on
Unreleased, Miscellaneous and Lonny Breaux
to his recent work such as Endless and Blonde.
Although Frank has produced numerous bodies
of work, only Channel Orange and Blonde are
accessible on all streaming platforms. Endless
was a visual album collaboration with Apple
Music, but the video can be found on YouTube
and the songs are available on SoundCloud,
in conjunction with his other releases.
“Pyramids” is a song that alludes to ancient
Egypt, with references to Cleopatra and
pyramids in its title. The song consists of two
distinct parts separated by a synth-like instru-
mental and an uncredited guitar solo by John
Mayer at the end. It incorporates elements of
progressive soul, funk, and R&B. The first half of

the song has a more abrasive and upbeat in-
strumental, while the second half is dreamy and
less gritty, with fewer layers. Interestingly, when
played, the notes in the instrumental form a
pyramid pattern: F-G-Ab-Bb-Ab-G-Ab-G-G
followed by F-G-Ab-Bb-Ab-G-Ab-G-G-G.
Initially, I construed the first half of the song as
referencing the historical Cleopatra and pyr-
amids before transitioning to a modern strip
club named “The Pyramid,” where a woman
named Cleopatra is employed; however, both
halves are about the evolution of a relationship.
The first half offers pretty vague lyrics such as
“Cymbals crash inside the pyramid” and “The
throne of our queen is empty”, but the lyrics of
the second half make it pretty obvious what
the song has been about (She’s working at the
pyramid tonight) and describes the motel and
the woman in more detail such as “Top floor
motel suite twisting my cigars, floor model TV
with the VCR”.

Honestly, “Pyramids” is a composition that
manages to elicit numerous emotions, which is
why it is so captivating to me and many others.
It transports me into the world that Frank has
created and enables me to envision the story
through his lyrics and the instrumental. It can

be both invigorating and soothing at various
points, and it is a song that one can dance and
be melancholic to, something that is not typ-
ically true of most songs. I remember the first
time my sister played it in our car and I laughed
because I thought what he was singing sound-
ed funny (He starts off singing something that
sounds like “ow ow ow ow”), which is crazy to
me because of how much I like it now. Eventu-
ally, I did start asking her to play it in the car be-
cause I realized it was actually a really good
song. I feel like the song just amplifies whatever
emotion I’m feeling at the moment. If I’m happy
or excited I like to dance around to it, but if I’m
sad I like singing along and feeling the emo-
tions that he emotes. I had a phase around 2
years ago where I’d love to recreate instrumen-
tals of songs I liked on Garageband (although
I was not very good at it) and in my search
for instrumentals, I found videos on making the
background music for Pyramids. Even though
it wasn’t the official instrumental, I could see
how many layers and how much work was put
into making the music express all these different
feelings. I can listen to this song doing anything,
but my preferred way to enjoy it is to play it
at full volume in my car at night while driving
alone.I feel like in general, playing sounds
loudly in the car are less likely to damage your
ear than playing directly into your airpods, but
give the same effect. I pay attention to every
drum kick and synth building up to create the
entire composition of this song. I love being
able to hear every layer and instrument of the
background, and having an instrumental as
complex as Pyramids amplifies this effect
even more.
futura HISTORY
Futura is a geometric sans-serif typeface de-

signed by Paul Renner in 1927. Renner was a

German typeface designer and teacher who
was influenced by the Bauhaus movement,
which was known for its focus on clean lines
and geometric shapes.

Futura was originally released by the Bauer

Type Foundry in Germany. The font was seen
as a departure from the ornate, decorative
typefaces of the time, and its simplicity and
readability made it a popular choice for both
commercial and artistic use.

During the 1930s, Futura became associated

with the modernist movement, and it was
widely used in graphic design, advertising,
and typography. The font was seen as a sym-

bol of the new, forward-thinking era, and it

was used in a variety of contexts, including film
titles, book covers, and even on the plaque left
on the moon by the Apollo 11 astronauts.

However, during World War II, the popular-

ity of Futura declined as it became associat-
ed with Germany and the Nazi regime. In the
years following the war, the font regained its
popularity, and it continued to be widely used
in graphic design and advertising throughout
the 1950s and 1960s.

In the decades that followed, Futura remained

I chose this font to represent “Pyramids” as its

harsh but round edges looked like what the
song and Frank as a whole felt to me.
