INTRODUCTION:

The topic of our discussion or conversation is the cooperative principle. Conversation

plays a vital role in human life. It helps facilitate the exchange of information and
knowledge, and develop relationships with others. Therefore, the importance of
conversation in our day-to-day life cannot be underestimated. Humans communicate
because communication is an effective means of development adopted between
individuals and groups alike. Humans communicate for the purpose and aim to give and
receive information in its various forms, which enable a person to pass information to
other people and to understand what is said to him. So to make sure that the desired
purpose is achieved through conversation and a mutual understanding is developed
among the conversational partners, certain rules of communication are important for the
conversational members to follow or respect. For productive conversation and
discussion, it is a prerequisite that the conversational partners adhere to certain rules of
communication. The Cooperative principle was proposed by the American famous
linguist Grice and regarded as a major contribution to the area of pragmatics which not
only plays an indispensable role in conversational implications- but also is a successful
example showing how human communication is governed by principle. When the
cooperative principle was introduced, it received a good result and with the use of the
four maxims of the cooperative principle, we would make a great contribution to
effective communication. The maxims explain the link between utterances and what is
understood from them. The maxim is based on the cooperative principle, which states
“Make your contribution such as it required, at the stage where it occurs, by the
accepted purpose or direction of the talk exchange in which you engaged”. Effective
communication in conversation is achieved in common socials situation and divided into
four maxims of quality, quantity, relation, and manner. The Cooperative principle makes
a great effect on the conversation. The final goal of the cooperative principle is
communicating with others fluently and correctly. The Cooperative principle is an
important component of pragmatics. The principles and maxims of it are about people’s
conversation. The cooperative principle can neatly explain the literary meaning and the
implication of conversation. However, people do not always follow the four maxims in
their conversations.
Our project is group-based. We did our project concisely and our group consists of six
members. First, we divided the whole topic among the members of our group, then
every member of our group individually prepared their topic, then after understanding
our topics we discussed it together in a group form, then we made a video of our
conversation and wrote down its transcription. So from this project, we analyzed the
video that to what extent our members have followed the principles and maxims of the
cooperative principle. The main purpose of the project was that either we are following
the principles and maxims of cooperative principles in our life or not. The Cooperative
principle makes our group members learn cooperation in their study. In cooperative
learning, we exchange ideas with each other and learn useful knowledge and skill from
each other. The Cooperative principle makes our group members realize the
significance of cooperation and team spirit in their study. So we make good use of the
advantages of the cooperative principle.
