Design Specifications Activity

Procedure
Consult with your customer(s) or intended customer(s) and complete the following in your
engineering notebook. Use the information you gather to craft your design specification.

1. Who is the target consumer?

Divide the following list of criteria among your team members. Each team member
will then identify specific requirements necessary for a successful solution related to
each assigned element. Be as specific as possible and include measurable values
where applicable. For example, use “Within one second the device must warn the
vehicle driver and disengage the cruise control when the car attains a distance of
less than 50 ft directly between itself and another vehicle” rather than “The device
must warn the driver and slow the vehicle when the car is too close to an object.” Be
sure to identify the source(s) of the information on which you base each constraint.
Add additional criteria as needed.
 Customer Needs. What does the customer want/need?

-The customer wants dry erase markers to have an extended lifetime that can
be cost effective and not damage the dry erase board itself, additionally can
also be time effective by needing a few minutes to become usable.

 Performance. What must the product be able to do? Be specific.

-It must be able to revive dry erase markers and need merely a few minutes for
the dry erase marker to be usable again. Easy insertion for the dry erase
marker into the product, requires minimal few minutes for dry erase marker to
become usable, and cannot be damaging to the dry erase marker and dry
erase board.

 Target Cost. What is the anticipated cost to the consumer for this product?

-The anticipated cost will be between $5 to $6 per unit. As the manufacturing

will cost about $2 to $3 dollars per unit.

 Size and Weight. What size should the product be, or what restrictions to size
exist? What are the weight restrictions on the product?

-There is not a weight restriction but the idea is for it to be small and simple so
the product will be about 5-10 ounces in weight. The product will be small like a
capsule that will be about a 1:1:1.5 inch.

 Aesthetics. Are there preferences in the appearance features of the product

(color, surface treatment, shape, material)? If so, describe them.

-There is no preference, only for efficiency.

 Materials. Is there a specific material or materials that must be used? If yes,
describe it.
There is no specific material other than the requirement of the material being
able to hold liquids for long periods of times and will not ruin the solution that it
comes into contact with.

 Safety and Legal Issues. Identify potential safety and legal issues that may
arise from the use of this product.

-Only issue I could think of is if the product went into someones’ eyes or was
consumed. But that can be minimized by selecting the correct material and
design, and labeling a warning and direction for use.

 Ergonomics. Identify considerations for the ergonomics of the product.

-Must be able to be held and moved around without spillage, must be able to
handle pressure from squeezing. There probably will be a a place that will help
with grip and pressure that can allow the product to hold firmly onto the expo
marker.

 Operating Environment. Identify the environmental conditions relevant to the

manufacture and use of the product (temperature, corrosion potential, dust or
dirt, pressure, humidity, vibration, noise, degree of abuse, etc.).

-Unfortunately there might be corrosion to the material that holds the liquid,
hence the importance of finding the right material. Other than that there should
not be any danger in terms of corrosion, just clean any spills that happen and
there should be no issue. The temperature and/or humidity might be an issue
but only might cause a pungent smell in the area but is not toxic. There should
be no danger for anything else, of course in the extremities of such conditions
might provide undesirable experiences but should not be toxic to any person.

 Global Environment. Will the product include any toxic or dangerous

substances? What is the plan for disposal of the product at the end of its useful
life?

-The product will have a liquid that will be common chemicals that are easy to
find in an common household. It might be a mixture of vinegar, water, baking
soda, and etc. The plan for disposal is to throw it in the trash orif there is some
liquid, to drain it and then throw the capsule in a trashcan.

 Service Life. What is the required service life of the product?

-It will last between 1 to 3 years depending on the combination of chemicals.

 Product Life. What is the anticipated length of time that the product will be
produced before it is replaced by a newer version or alternate product?

-The anticipated length of time to be manufactured will be about perhaps 1 to 3

days. If you are speaking about newer innovations, depending on the patent,
maybe 20 years or merely a few years. I do not think the invention is hard,
especially in a team or with capital resources.

 Durability and Maintenance. Will the product require routine maintenance

during its service life?

-No, it will not require maintenance and hopefully be durable during the lifetime.

 Quality. How effective will the quality of the product be?

-Hopefully, the quality will be pretty high as I will attempt to experiment and find
the right concoction that will be effective and longlasting.

2. As a team prioritize your list of criteria from most important to least important.
1.) Customer Needs
2.) Safety and Legal Issues
3.) Performance
4.) Target Cost
5.) Quality
6.) Size and Weight.
7.) Operating Environment
8.) Global Environment.
9.) Service Life
10.) Durability and Maintenance.
11.) Product Life
12.) Ergonomics
13.) Materials.
14.) Aesthetics.
3. As a team list applicable constraints that the designer must work within. Be specific.
In other words, listing “time” as a constraint is not acceptable – you must state
specifically how much time is available for the design process.

-Time: Able to create a product between April 11 th to May 3rd

-Materials: Should be from things we own or things that are easily obtainable.
-Needs to follow FDA requirements.
