BACKGROUND: People use money for different purposes. To avoid impulse buying they
should draft a proper budget proposing their needs in relation to what they have
Family needs are that are essential for the family‘s well-being. After research, I found out that
the basic needs of a family are food, shelter, clothes, education and health care. These services
cost certain prices that are presented in the table below
Food
Product Price
Bread 800.00 per loaf
Meat 3000.00 per kg
Potatoes 700.00 per kg
Sugar 890.00 per kg
Salt 375.00 per kg
Mealie meal 4500.00 per 10kg
Eggs 3850.00 per crate
Tomatoes 990.00 per kg
Onions 1530.00 per kg
These above shows the prices of goods under the category of food I got at a local store. The
cheapest of these products is bread as it is the most locally found and the most expensive product
is mealie meal as it comes in larger quantities
Clothing
Clothes cost an average of $10 000.00 depending on the number of people in a family. Extended
families might have to pay more than the average as they will have to provide clothes for a large
number of people while nuclear families pay less for clothing as they only pay for 4 people or
less. The below shows the costs of clothing for different types of families

Education
Education is one of the most important factors that are needed in a family. Children have a right
to access education although education costs are high nowadays and cost an average of $23 000.
Families two more children might require more than average amount listed wiliest one parent
families might need less.
Shelter
Shelter is a basic family need, which is important for survival. Shelter protects us from both
natural and man-made hazards. Shelter costs are increasing gradually every year, which means
that only a few people can afford a place to stay leading t creation of shacks. Shelter provides us
with security, protects us from weather hazards and prevents ill health and disease.
