Fellowship Advert: Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Fellowship


Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) received funding from the U.S.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S CDC) to develop a curriculum for a post
graduate diploma in infection prevention and control (IPC) with aim of training IPC
professionals within the country. IPC constitutes systems, policies and work place practices
aimed at prevention and control of healthcare associated infections, promote patient and
healthcare worker safety; optimize quality of healthcare, contain antimicrobial resistance, and
minimize healthcare costs. The Ministry of Health is developing a National Strategic Plan for
IPC based on the WHO’s 8 core components of which its execution requires duly trained IPC
professionals with at least a Postgraduate diploma in IPC. As such, the MakSPH in
collaboration with the Departments of Medical Microbiology and Nursing; and with support
from U.S CDC has developed a curriculum for a Postgraduate Diploma in IPC. The purpose
of this advert, is to recruit Fellows for a pilot implementation of the curriculum.

Period of fellowship training: 6 Months

Required Academic Qualifications: The interested applicants should have a minimum of a


diploma in any of the following disciplines: Nursing, Midwifery, Medical Laboratory
Science/technology, Public health, Clinical medicine, Pharmacy, Environmental Health
Sciences, community health, or any other health-related disciplines. Possession of a Bachelor’s
degree in the above field will be an added advantage.
Essential Requirements: At least 2-3 years of relevant experience in IPC. Priority will be
given to IPC focal persons, IPC Chairpersons, being on an IPC or Quality Improvement
committee in a public health facility. Good oral and written communication skills; and Strong
IT skills.
