Module 2 Coursework: Reducing energy consumption of devices in 3 IEEE Articles

1) Portable Crack Width Calculation of Concrete Road Pavement Using Machine Vision

Link: https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9072731

Improvements: Reducing power and energy consumption of the device for crack width calculation in
concrete road pavement can be achieved by optimizing the image processing algorithm, using low-power
components, implementing power management features, using renewable energy sources, and reducing
the number of images captured.

2) Warning System for Firefighters Using E-Textile

Link: https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/8463320

Improvements: Implement power management features: The system can be designed to include power
management features such as sleep modes, power gating, and dynamic voltage and frequency scaling.
These features can help to reduce power consumption when the system is not in use or when it is
performing less computationally intensive tasks, which depends on the gravity of the situation during a
fire disaster.

3) Braille-based Pillbox for Visually Impaired with Audio Reminder

Link: https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9230519

Improvements: One way to optimize energy and power consumption for this device is to incorporate
low-power wireless communication technology, such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), for receiving text
messages and controlling the pillbox. BLE consumes less power than traditional Bluetooth, which can
help extend the battery life of the device. Additionally, using low-power microcontrollers and sensors can
help reduce power consumption further. The device can also be designed to enter into sleep mode when
not in use, which can save power. Lastly, using rechargeable batteries and incorporating a charging circuit
can make the device more eco-friendly and cost-effective in the long run.
