Guidelines for Liturgists

Thank you for helping us worship by your willingness to lead this week. The liturgist is an
important part of the leadership team, and these guidelines are written to help you feel more
confident in reading and praying in the worship service. It is important that you read and
understand what is being asked of you as a liturgist.

1. Please make sure you conduct a microphone check with the sound person. This will
help ensure that people can hear your opening remarks, as well as your readings.
2. Please sit near the lectern so there is not a lengthy period of time between various
aspects of the service. (This is especially important in the 11:00 service).
3. Practice your Scripture readings before coming to worship. The more you practice, the
more confident you will be. It may be helpful to read the verses before the reading as
well as those that follow the reading to have a sense of what the Scripture is all about.
I am a Lectionary preacher, which means we know what Scripture will be read months
ahead of time.
4. When reading or praying, please speak clearly and slowly.
5. Please read the version of Scripture that is projected on the screen. Normally this is
the RSV (Revised Standard Version). If you feel you must read a different version,
please talk to the pastor.
6. 11:00 Liturgists - Please announce the name of the hymn, the page number it can be
found on, and the verses we will be singing as noted in the bulletin.

Again, thank you for ministering to the congregation this week by sharing your talents and your
presence. We pray that this experience will bless you as much as it blesses the congregation.
