Solid Mechanics (고체역학) : Course Description
Solid Mechanics (고체역학) : Course Description
(고체역학)
Course Description
This class aims to study a branch of applied mechanics that deals with the internal behavior of
variously loaded solid bodies. It provides future engineers with the means of analyzing and designing
various machines and load-bearing structures. This course focuses on the relationships between
external loads and internal forces and deformations or displacements induced in the body. Stress and
strain are the fundamental quantities connected with the former and latter. Throughout the course,
fundamentals of the subject, the three aspects of solid mechanics problems, and the applications
necessary to prepare students for more advanced study and for engineering practice will be
emphasized. Students will learn various topics such as stress and strain, analysis of members
subjected to axial loads, torsion, bending, and pressure, fracture and failure criteria, and the column’s
stability under compressive loading. Since many of the engineering design applications are based
upon the principles of these subjects, a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of these subjects
is of vital importance.
Prerequisite Courses

Attendance Policy
Participation begins with attendance. Both absences and tardiness will greatly affect your final grade.
You are allowed four absences without penalty. These four absences include ALL the legitimate
absences granted by Hanyang University, such as job interviews and health problems. You don’t have
to submit any document for these four absences. However, the fifth absence will result in the
reduction of grade by a full letter grade (A+ → A0, A0 → B+, …). Please remember: I do not accept
ANY absence more than these four absences, even though it is the kind that is granted by the
university. I know that sickness happens, accidents happen, bad weather happens, computer problems
happen, oversleeping happens, and family crises happen. These absences are NOT NEGOTIABLE in
any case. That is why you need to use the four absences in a wise way. Also, arrival in class more
than 30 minutes after it begins will be counted as an absence.
