S4 Mathematics Homework 7

Recall that we learn four main questions in chapter 2:

(i) Solving quadratic equation
(ii) Numbers of roots
(iii) Sum of roots and product of roots
(iv) Finding quadratic equation given the two solutions / roots

Let’s focus on (i) and (ii) in this homework.

1. Given a quadratic equation

What would you do to solve for x?

2. Given a quadratic equation

How would you determinate the number of real roots?

3. Solve the following quadratic equations and express your answers in surd form or of the
form a + bi if necessary. (Remember you can use formula 01 and 137 program!!!)
(a) x2 + 5x – 14 = 0
(b) x2 + 4x – 7 = –8
(c) 4a2 = 3a + 2
(d) 2x2 + 2x + 2 = 0
4. Find the area of a right-angled triangle whose sides are (6x – 1) cm, (8x + 5) cm and 10x
cm, where the side of length (8x + 5) cm is the hypotenuse.

5. In each of the following, solve the given equation graphically.

(Give the answers correct to 1 decimal place.)

(a) 2x2 – x – 3 = 0 (b) –x2 – 2x + 1 = 0

y y

8 2

6 1
y = –x2 – 2x + 1
4 x
–4 –3 –2 –1 0 1 2

2 –1
y = 2x2 – x – 3

x –2
–2 –1 0 1 2 3

–2 –3

–4
6. The quadratic equation 10x – (b + 3)x2 = 5 has real roots.
(a) Find the range of the values of b.
(b) When b takes up the second largest integer in the range found in (a), solve the
equation. (Leave the answers in surd form if necessary.)

7. Let m be a constant. If the quadratic equation (x – 2m)(x – 1) = m(2 – m) has no real

roots, find the range of the values of m.
