LEARNING TASK #2
1. What is Research? Cite definition coming from different sources. Example: Polit & Beck (2001)
Answer:
Research is a careful, systematic and objective investigation conducted to obtain valid facts, draw
conclusions and established principles regarding an identifiable problem in some field of knowledge. -Clarke
and Clarke
Research is a systematic and objective analysis and recording of controlled observations that may lead to the
development of generalizations, principles, theories and concepts, resulting in prediction for seeing and
possibly ultimate control of events. -John .W. Best

2. Importance of Research
-The main purposes of research are to inform action, gather evidence for theories, and contribute to
developing knowledge in a field of study. This article discusses the significance of research and the many
reasons why it is important for everyone—not just students and scientists.
Understanding that research is important might seem like a no-brainer, but many people avoid it like the
plague. Yet, for those who like to learn, whether they are members of a research institution or not, conducting
research is not just important—it's imperative.
3. Goals of Research
Never shy from the truth, whatever your theory says should be true. Be meticulous in your methods. Read
and cite the work of those who came before you and on whose work you can build. Stay focused on your
topic and try not to be distracted -- the deeper your knowledge becomes, the more likely you are to be able to
make meaningful contributions.
4. Purpose of Research
-The purpose of research is to enhance society by advancing knowledge through the development of
scientific theories, concepts and ideas.
5. Characteristics of Research
Controlled - all variables except those that are tested/experimented upon are kept constant.
Analytical - There is critical analysis of all data used so that there is no error in their interpretation
Objective, Unbiased, & Logical - all findings are logically based on empirical
Employs quantitative or statistical methods - data are transformed into numerical measures and are treated
statistically.
basic research aims at expanding knowledge by creating new theories and modifying existing ones, applied
research is focused on providing practical solutions to specific problems by analyzing empirical evidence.
