Information and Technology Application Tools in Business

Final project and exam
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION

For 26 years, through military coups, typhoons, and other occurrences, Rolly Lucob's
clientele have flocked to his Davao City barbershop for more than simply a haircut and shave.
Rich and poor alike have crowded into the shop in Ma-a, Davao City during the entire ordeal
and lingered longer than required to discuss the day's news and barter the most recent political
and religious gossip. However, everything has altered as a result of the pandemic. On those
days, the store is almost completely deserted. The clamor of conversation has been muffled,
and the few individuals that anxiously trickle in are not in the mood to engage in small talk.

The humble barber shop or Mr. Rolly Lucob is situated within the heart of People’s Village in
Maa, albeit small, the business has been constant and consistently inclined to profits that
continue to support the necessities of his family. The owner himself is also the barber which, at
some times, made him ineffective of catering long queues of customers during days where
students are required to have their monthly haircut as prescribed by their schools, and people
who wanted to trim the lengths of their respective thick manes. The upper hand of Mr. Lucob is
that his barbershop is the sole barbershop that you can locate within the village; thus, the go-to
shop for most of the males that are geographically settled within their place. This carried on for
quite some time until the pandemic starts hitting the metropolis of Davao and everyone
became secluded within their respective abodes.

CHAPTER 1 | INTRODUCTION
As the state of emergency was declared in April 2020 against the backdrop of global
outbreak of COVID-19, it precipitated a severe economic downturn by restricting social and
economic activities. Although a sign of recovery was seen after the declaration was lifted in May,
with phased implementation of government policies providing fiscal stimulus to the economy,
uncertainty remained due to raising fear of repeat outbreaks.

Since then, the Philippines has been in various stages of lockdown, the longest stretch of any
country in Asia. The barbershop, like many businesses, was initially forced to close when the
virus was first detected, but has since been allowed to reopen subject to stringent health codes
and measures. The barbers are required to wear yellow medical coveralls and face shields. A
sign taped above a mirror reads, “No face mask, not allowed.” Only four customers can be
accommodated at any given time, and they are told to disinfect before entering the shop.
(Gutierrez, 2020)

The researchers have selected Rolly’s barbershop since it exhibits multiple concerns that
requires alleviation on numerous perspectives and in discovering the most appropriate
framework of solution that will improve the business system of the shop. The researchers
aimed to grasp on the real-life challenges that is encountered by the barbershop to be able to
process a vicarious learning that they can bring as they become entrepreneurs in the futures to
come. The results of this study may contribute to the realization of improvement on the inflows
of profits as well on the facet of marketing and attracting more target markets.

CHAPTER 2 | DETERMINATION OF THE PROBLEM

CHAPTER THREE
SOLUTIONS AND DISCUSSION

In a business, the arising of multiple challenges is a definitive indicator that the business is
trying to thrive and survive within the market. The researchers have thought of numerous
approaches that correlates to the situation of Rolly’s Barbershop. The group has utilized the
schematic diagram of a problem-solving framework that is derived from the study of Van Aken,
J.E., & Berends, H. (2018) to effectively view the situation within a broader lens.

FIGURE 1. SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM OF A PROBLEM-SOLVING PROCESS

(Van Aken, J. E., & Berends, H., 2018).

The first two stages which are “Define the Problem” and “Determine the Root Cause” has
been tackled thoroughly on the previous pages. This chapter will focalize on the solutions that
the group has thought, considering multiple factors that are economically inclined. The
alternatives that the group thought of were as follows: Social Media Marketing, Appointment
Scheduling, and Improvements on the shop’s appearance. After a rigorous and methodological
discussion, the group came up with an inclusive approach of all the ideas specially those that
are strongly linked to IT communication since most of the target markets are well-versed to the
virtual world.

CHAPTER 3 | SOLUTIONS AND DISCUSSION

Social media marketing is a clever IT choice that can be applied to a business in today's
world. Social media as a marketing tool is undoubtedly a quick, affordable, and efficient way to
reach far more people than word-of-mouth publicity can. Mr. Lucob can interact and connect
with potential customers using social media, and the best part is majority of social media
platforms with large user bases are free to use. These include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and
even TikTok, where Mr. Lucob can set up a page and account to promote his barber shop by
routinely posting before-and-after images of customers' haircuts and other information about
his shop that might be of interest to potential clients. The social media platforms can also be
used to research trends and consumer preferences in order to generate ideas for the
barbershop. This will undoubtedly aid in bringing in new clients, and before long, Mr. Lucob's
clientele won't be limited to the residents of the village where his barbershop is located or his
friends.

Making use of appointment scheduling IT tools and apps is another idea the group has for
improving Mr. Lucob's Barbershop. The ability to schedule client appointments using one of the
many widely available, free to download appointment scheduling apps—or even the calendar
app that comes pre-installed on almost all smartphones—can be a huge help in managing a
successful business. This will make it simpler for Mr. Lucob to see his availability and find the
ideal time in his schedule, especially during busy and peak seasons, to accommodate a client
appointment. In addition, this calendar schedule will alert him days or hours in advance of a
schedule and can be accessed whenever and wherever as long as he is carrying his phone. In
this way, productivity wouldn't decrease and there wouldn't be any time wasted as a result of a
disorganized schedule.

The interior design of the place of work is just as significant as how much work you put into
your services since it is a reflection of your company and a vital factor in accomplishing your
goals. The customer's first impression is critical to the business, and an impressive interior
design of the premises will undoubtedly leave them with a positive impression. Abercrombie, S.
(2018) claimed that a calming and engrossing interior design of a shop assures a customer,
increases the focus of the worker, and improves the mood of everyone. This will play a
significant role in determining whether a customer will return. To ensure that customers are at
ease, the area should be made inviting. The intention is to get people to go there for a great
experience rather than just out of pure necessity or lack of options due to the area's scarcity of
barbershops.

As accountancy students, we would also integrate the financial outlining and organization of
the barbershop. Through the utilization of Microsoft excel, we can instruct and upskill a basic
bookkeeping process to see if the profits are stabilizing, or even going up. Monetary allocation
may also be realized through this application so that the funds may go on various lengths like
investing on a spacious environment and such. The study of Todd, T. M., & Seay, M. C. (2020)
provides that financial provides an insight on how an entity should improve the operations of
the business and enhances financial literacy that is essential in forecasting future economic
benefits.

CHAPTER FOUR

CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS,

& REFLECTIONS

This study has determined and evaluated the challenges of Rolly’s Barbershop and has
explored numerous solutions that are appropriate to improve the shop’s footing. The following
conclusions were drawn from this study:

1. Rolly’s barbershop, albeit the sole shop within the village, lacks
focus on marketing and financial organization.

2. The owner’s barber skill emanates a lot of potential but only few are
able to know his abilities.

3. The location of the shop is geographically secluded which hampers

the accessibility of potential customers.

CHAPTER 4 | CONCLUSIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS, & REFLECTIONS
RECOMMENDATIONS & REFLECTIONS

The following recommendations and reflections were drawn from study:

1. Mr. Lucob may utilize the free-to-use IT tools and social media platforms
to have an effective engagement to the target markets within the metropolis
of Davao.

2. Financial coordination has to be employed to enhance the shop’s

economic inflows through the use of MS excel or related spreadsheet-
inclined software to monitor net income.

3. The shop’s humble interior could use a tad of improvement, and may
proceed to a more spacious working environment in the future that can be
easily located. Interior planning may be commenced through in-app
sketching software such as procreate.

4. Technological literacy may also be honed to effectively manipulate the

Information System employment within the barbershop business.
