Question One

A slab which has several continuous spans of 5 m is to carry an imposed load

of 3 kN/m2 as a one way spanning slab. The loading from finishes and light
partitions can each be considered equivalent to a uniformly distributed load
of 1 kN/m2.
Taking the density of reinforced concrete to be 24 kN/m3, concrete grade,
fcu as 25 N/mm2, steel characteristic strength fy as 460 N/mm2, overall slab
depth of slab as 175 mm, cover of 20 mm and bar diameter of 10 mm,
Design a typical interior panel whose bay area is more than 30 m2. (50 marks)

Question Two
A braced slender column o0f 300 mm x 400 mm cross section carries an ultimate
axial load of 800 kN. It is bent in double curvature about the major axis, carrying
ultimate moments of 80 kNm and 40 kNm at its ends. The effective length of the
column corresponding to the major axis is 7200 mm.
Assume cover is 30 mm, link diameter is 8 mm and main bar diameter is 25 mm.
Determine and sketch the column reinforcement if fcu = 25 N/mm2 and fy = 460 N/mm2.
