Listening Strategies Based on Purpose
Listening is the ability to accurately receive and interpret messages in the
communication process. Always remember that no communication process is complete
without listening. Having this skill is very vital especially in decision making. Moreover, to
become an effective speaker, you should be an effective listener. It is imperative to know
your purpose as you listen to the material provided and apply the different strategies for a
better understanding. Listening strategies are techniques or activities that contribute
directly to the comprehension and recall of listening input. They are the following:
1. Listening for the Main Idea A type of listening wherein you listen to grasp the
main points or general information presented in the audio.
2. Listening for Details A type of listening wherein you grasp specific
information and important details like hours, dates, places, or names. You
need to focus to get the relevant information you need.
3. Listening for a Sequence You listen to get the information you need to act on
or orders you need to follow. It is important to get the order and understand
the sequence correctly and what each step entails.
4. Listening for Specific Vocabulary The purpose of this type is to identify and
remember a series of words, which are usually easily categorized, like types
of foods, sports, or animals.
4. Concentrate and pay attention. Good listeners must work to develop the
ability to concentrate and ignore distractions.
5. Focus on what’s important. One of the keys of effective listening is the
ability to concentrate on central ideas and main focuses.
6. Link past and current learnings. One way of improving your listening skills
is by actively engaging with the new material that you’re learning. This can be
done by linking what you’ve learned in the past with what you’re currently
learning.
7. Be prepared. You should never neglect to complete reading or other class
assignments before the class starts.
8. Choose to be interested. Effective listeners become interested in the subject
material, so they can process the information and pay attention to the lecture.
9. Be physically ready. Being physically ready starts with good posture. Make
sure that you’re sitting up straight instead of slouching or getting too
comfortable. Maintaining good posture can be an important part of staying
alert during a lesson.
10. Respond appropriately. As you listen to someone speaks, you take notes to
help yourself understand the message. When you agree with a speaker’s
message you usually nod, but if you disagree, you can politely ask for
clarifications.
