Directions: Complete the following graphic organizer to prepare to write your essay. Use the
provided template for the thesis statement.

Thesis Statement (use template)

Two influences in Malala Yousafzai's career as an activist were her father and her country’s
culture.

1st Body Paragraph


Topic Sentence (state that your person’s career was influenced by the first
factor/element):

Her father told her that education is important for everyone including women, this made
her continue her schooling which led to her career as an activist.

Explanation of Influence (put article contents in your own words and include citations):
● She was encouraged by her father to value education from an early age. He
engaged her in many different topics at home. She also was taught English and
learned to prioritize freedom of ideas and to want to help others gain access to

● Ziauddin Yousafzai, Malala’s father, was a teacher. He ran several all girls
private schools to make sure girls were also educated.(“Malala Yousafzai.”)
● Her father loved Malala writing about her experiences and writing a blog.(“Malala

● This differed from other people in their culture’s views on women’s rights.
Women are not in any way treated fairly compared to men.(“Malala Yousafzai”)

Malala’s father was a big influence to Malala by encouraging her to help others, this led
to her becoming an activist on women’s rights and education

Another major influence that contributed to Malala Yousafzai’s life and brave journey was the
way their culture treated women.

● Pakistani tradition and social structure never let women talk freely or even to
work. (Malala Yousafzai)
● When Malala was born, people, such as family members, were telling her parents
that it was okay that they had a girl, they could still have a boy next. (Michelle

● Many girls who lived close by did not go to school. (Michelle Roehm McCann)
● Females could not even go outside without a male family member. If they did not
follow this, they would get attacked and killed. (Michelle Roehm McCann)
● People thought speaking out for women’s rights was so bad that the Taliban tried

● On the way to school, the Taliban stopped her bus, and shot her and two other

In Malala Yousafzai, the writers talk about women’s rights :“In Pakistan, women have long
struggled for equality with men. There are many women’s rights groups in Pakistan, but
they are often targeted by militant groups such as the Taliban. The Pakistan government
has been accused of not doing enough to protect the women.”
