BODY SHAMING
PREPARED BY: DOMINIC GAPASIN
What is Body Shaming?
WHAT IS BODY SHAMING?
Body shaming is the practice of
ridiculing or insulting someone due to
their looks. Shaming individuals based
on their size, shape, skin tone, hair
color, body hair, and overall
appearance is one of its many
dimensions.
WHAT IS BODY SHAMING?
Body shaming may be considered a
form of bullying as it includes
making inappropriate or
unnecessary comments about one's
body size or shape.
Why does this occur?
WHY DOES THIS OCCUR?
Although people are more accepting of differences
today, young people are more likely to want to appear a
certain way due to social media pressure. They have the
tendency to be worried about their appearance when
they are triggered by unfavorable comments.
Effects:
A. Low self-esteem, anxiety, and depressive
symptoms. Body shaming can cause feelings of
avoidance and a desire to isolate oneself due to the
shame experienced. The feelings of low self-esteem,
self-image, and self-worth can also be noticed. Even
worse, it may cause a person to feel alone and sorry
for themselves, which can trigger depression.
B. Unhealthy eating habits. Poor eating
patterns might result from body shaming.
Eating excessively to gain weight or not eating
at all to decrease weight are two extreme
examples. People may become more
susceptible to developing an eating disorder
as a result.
How do we fight against body
shaming?
Body positivity - Developing the ability to accept one's
own flaws and finding satisfaction in one's appearance
and personality. No amount of criticism that may be
directed at us can bring us down once we have totally
accepted how we look.

Don't alter your appearance because of what you have

heard from others if you want to. Do it because it will
help you feel better about yourself or get healthy.
Maintain healthy friendships - Spend time
with individuals that accept you for who you
are and who are body positive. Spend time
with those who will promote a healthy self-
image and forbid any form of body shaming.
Educate -Body shaming is not pleasant
and should not be tolerated. If you catch
anyone shaming another, confront and
educate them. Talk it out nicely and
discuss the harmful effects of body
shaming a person.
All I can say is that no one should be
evaluated or made to feel
embarrassed of their appearance as
someone who has experienced
body-shaming in the past. The
standards set by society shouldn't be
your guide in life. Live your life on
your own terms, and cherish who you
really are. You need to develop a
positive self-image because you are
worthy.
