9B #1 COUNT ON THE SOURCE / EXPLOIT THE SOURCE OF POWER

Paul is praying that God will give believers spiritual power that flows from the vast, limitless resources of God
Himself. Those very resources became ours when we trusted Christ as Savior. The phrase “the riches of His
glory” speaks of those spiritual attributes and abilities that belong to God because of Who He is.

ILLUSTRATION:
Sadly, most believers live like spiritual paupers when they are in fact the possessors of limitless spiritual
wealth.

We are like the young man who was on a railroad platform years ago begging money for food. He
walked up to an elderly man and said, “Sir, could you spare a dime?”
 When the old man turned, the young man saw the face of his father looking back at him. He had not
seen his father in 18 years.

The father immediately recognized his son and embraced him and through tears said, “A dime? Why,
my son, I have been searching for you for 18 years so that I could give you everything I have.”

10A There is no lack of power, glory and blessing for the people of God.

 The apparent lack of these things in our generation stems from a lack of the ability to appropriate by faith
the things God has given to us.
 The lack of these things exists because we are more concerned with the physical than the spiritual.

10B GOD’S POWER AND GLORY ARE LIMITLESS, AND OUR ACCESS TO THOSE THINGS IS
ONLY LIMITED BY OUR ABILITY TO YIELD TO HIM.

TS: YOU DON’T HAVE TO LIVE A LIFE IN SCARCITY BECAUSE YOU AND I HAVE A RICH
SOURCE.

Whenever I went to Wendy ’s and ordered a value meal. The cashier asked me if I wanted to supersize
my order. He wanted to know if I wanted my order to be bigger. I told him no; I just wanted my regular-
sized order. He asked me again to make sure I didn’t want my order supersized. I told him no thank you,
got my regular-sized order, and left off.

This does not mean that we possess spiritual power in and of ourselves. It does mean that because we are in a
relationship with the Lord, we have been empowered.

The word also refers to “moral power and excellence of soul.” In this passage, it is speaking of the “strength of
God in the inner man that enables the believer to live for the Lord.”

13A It is a Strength to do what?

 
 13B To stand out amid opposition, and against all obstacles!
 13C To speak up and even finding the strength to say, “I forgive you!” to people that have so hurt
you!
 13D To support burdens (Gal 6:2) – carry other people’s problems, along with your own
 13E To stay faithful – against the flow, against popularity, against demonic attack
 13F To stay free from sin’s power and guilt – who wants to get free from a sin only to become
enslaved again, and again, and again?
 13G To sing and praise God when everything is falling apart! What a power!
There is not a person in this room that doesn’t need THAT kind of a strength!

How many of us have questioned the actions of sports stars or movie stars?

Divorces, alcohol binges, drugs, rehabilitations, suicides due to drug overdoses, arrests, for some the worst
behaviors

Why do they do these things when they have so much in the terms of worldly wealth?

 They have no control over the “inner man”

 That far too often is the problem with you and I as Christians
 We try to control the “inner man”

Note God’s Word says 12 “the inner man must be strengthened by the Holy Spirit” … not by us

I am praying this so that you may be completely filled with God.

THE STRENGTHEN BY THE SPIRIT BALLOON ILLUSTRATION:

 Inflate the balloon with my own air (say: THIS IS YOU AND ME LIVING IN OUR STRENGTH)
 Toss the balloon on air and try to keep it away from the ground while saying things we do in our
strength to be good and be pleasing to God like I will read my Bible, I will make a Daily Journal, I will
be a good discipler, etc.
 TRANSITION: say; we get tired and fail to keep these things BECAUSE WE ARE LIVING ON OUR
STRENGTH (then LET the balloon fall on the ground), what filled that balloon? Our AIR.
 When we are filled mostly of ourselves, we will always end up failing.
 TRANSITION: Bring out the balloon inflated with HELIUM. But when we are filled with the Spirit, we
will experience the fullness of God.
