SUSTAINABILITY is the ability of a person, community, or country to be able to sustain

itself or aquire all of their needs on their own with less struggle.

There are seventeen (17) sustainable development goals that I know.

It is important to learn about SDG because one can identify the current
problems or issues that we know right now that are probably solvable, and perhaps to be able to
identify other problems that might appear in the future (e.g. climate change was not a concern
100 years ago), and so that people that learn of these development goals can contribute through
opinions or small efforts towards these goals for their incremental improvements so that large
groups that decide to tackle larger problems may probably have less work to do for the
realization of these goals.

HOW CAN A STUDENT LIKE ME HELP THE EARTH?

To align the actions that I need to do as a student for

our planet that I can do is to study, and be aware of the
problems that every person and every living organisms
experience. Although first, I must first work on myself and fix
all of the problems and build my character and an emotionally
stable mind and a healthy body, because no one wants to work
with someone on large issues with this when their own lives
are a mess. I can also abide by the rules that were set up in the
community I’m in so that I won’t increase the work of the
people that are already working on this, and to also perhaps
contribute a little for the long term.
Activity # 3

LET’S WRAP UP!

ELABORATE
Now that you have learned something about SDG’s, let us check how much you know about it.
Answer the questions below.

1. What are SDG’s and why do you think it has to be studied?

The SDG’s are goals created and agreed upon by more than a hundred countries to treat
concerning issues like poverty, climate change, inequality, education and more, and because these goals
are identified we can create measures to help ease the problems.

2. How will SDG’s be achieved? Why? Why not?

On my opinion, all of these SDG’s will be very difficult to solve because some of them are
connected to each other and this could have possitive and negative effects. For example, its effects can
become possitive if you create solutions towards poverty then naturally people won’t have to worry about
their own survival and start to look into the future and care for the environment and have supplies to help
them with education. I can also become negative if the need or demand for electricity prevents the
solutions for the climate change because renewable energy is very inefficient in producing energy to cope
up with the demand. Germany actually tried switching to wind and solar but they produced more carbon
dioxide than when they started because the sun goes down and wind doesn’t blow that often so they have
to turn their coal-fired plants again. So the goals have their constituents and we irritate them if we
prioritize, but if we don’t prioritize then we can’t implement the plans.

3. In the five years since the SDGs were adopted, what actions has the international
community taken to achieve the Goals?

In the five years since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, the awareness
of people has been increased about the concerning issues and because of that many countries
begun implementing or creating the plans to help ease the problems. Groups are being created
and started movements towards the goals and successfully reduced the problems and even caused
technological advancement or innovations in pursuit of clean and sustainable energy.
4. What do you think are the challenges encountered by many countries in the world
especially in the Philippines in achieving these goals? Elaborate your answer.

The most evident challenges that many countries in the world including Philippines are
limited resources because if a continuous and stable supply is available then the prices of the
products like necessities and more would not fluctuate so much. A weak governance could also
be in play making the implementation of the goals very very difficult and could result into
corruption because of the huge flow of money invested for the problems we are facing.

5. As a student and a citizen, how can you contribute to the achievement of SDG’s?

One must begin by building himself/herself up to ensure that we are informed enough,
emotionally and physically healthy enough to consistently uphold or support and adapt these
goals without any personal problems as much as possible that may hinder your decision making,
and also to be competent enough as to not just implement plans without any kind of forethought
so that you can become a functioning node in a network or a ripple that extends and affects their
surroundings possitively.
ACTIVITY #4

Give your inference for each of the picture. Give at least two solutions for each problem.
Write your answer in a separate answer sheet.

GOAL 1: No Poverty

In this picture it is said that everyone deserves the

chance to become rich or have enough resources to at
least live a decent life, and it’s true since we are all equal
before the law and god, and the equality of opportunity
is desired by all and if it is realized then the world would
be a safer place to live in.

Solutions to poverty:

 Education is one of the possible solutions to poverty to give the people the necessary
skills and develop their creativity to cope up with the rapid changes in the world and turn
every problems to opportunity.
 Governments can create more safety nets so that people that experienced tremendous
losses can climb back up again to prevent poverty from increasing.

GOAL 2: Zero Hunger

Most of us are lucky enough that we can expect food

every day on our tables, but 10% of the world’s
population is still suffering from starvation. Some of the
people can only eat one type of food and not receiving
the necessary nutrients for having a variety of foods to
function properly.

Solutions to Hunger:

 We have to encourage people to only buy the necessary food for a certain amount of time
and they must not waste food as much as possible so that more people can aquire or
afford food because if we buy our needs in an amount that is more than necessary, then it
could affect the prices of the goods and poor people might not afford them.
 By buying the exact amount of goods, then we can export the excess amount of produce
to other countries that require them.

GOAL 13: Climate Action

The crisis of climate change is one of the alarming

problems people of today have to face because the rapid
change of the temperature can create catastrophes that
damages certain parts of the world and it is caused and
accelerated by human activity. Water levels are rising
because the polar ice caps are continuing to melt and
several islands in the world had already disappeared
because of this.

Solutions to Climate Change:

 Avoid polluting bodies of water because there are certain microorganisms that help
decrease the CO 2 in the water like the Diatoms and they can absorb 10-20 million tonnes
of CO 2 that floats in the surfaces of the oceans every year. Diatoms can survive polluted
waters but they multiply better on healthy bodies of water.
 Innovations to produce cleaner sources of energy that is also low on cost to provide
enough energy for cities and make people more productive. As of now, scientist had been
able to recreate nuclear fusion on a laboratory successfully and is currently hiring
engineers to recreate it again on a large scale.

GOAL 4: Quality Education

Education is one of the leading factors on the

achievement of the human race and the very
reasons as to why there is less suffering now
when compared to any point in time in the past. It
is all thanks to good teachers who made the
choice to learn all of the things in their expretise
and decided to teach it to the next generation.

Solutions to have Quality Education:

 Encourage the students and to activate their innate curiosity within themselves to that
they are enthusiastic to learn anything new or something they are curious about, because
good teachers and school materials are of no use if the students themselves do not want to
learn.
 Increase the funding for education so that schools can be built in the remote parts of the
country and so that the teachers or the school faculties are rewarded for their efforts.
