INTRODUCTION
• Aquaponics refers to any system that combine conventional
aquaculture with hydroponics in symbiotic environment
• Hydroponics is a subset of hydroculture, which is a method of
growing plants without soil.
• Aquaculture is the propagation and husbandry of aquatic plants and
animals for commercial, recreational, and scientific purposes

FLOW CHART

Fish are raised in a tank

Water from the fish tank is pumped to the

plants

Plants absorb the nutrient rich water

Bacteria convert ammonia and nitrite to

nitrate

Filtered water is returned to the fish tank

NITROGEN CYCLE

TYPES OF AQUAPONIC SYSTEM
• Floating raft method: In a raft system (also known as float, deep channel
and deep flow) the plants are grown on polystyrene boards (rafts) that float
on top of water. A significant amount of nitrification occurs on the
undersides of the polystyrene sheets

TYPES OF AQUAPONIC SYSTEM
• Gravel system method: It is a cheap and readily available growing media
that is filled in the grow bed. To ensure adequate aeration of plant roots,
gravel beds have been operated in a reciprocating mode, where the beds are
alternately flooded and drained.

TYPES OF AQUAPONIC SYSTEM
• Nutrient Film Technique (NFT): This is a method in which the plants are
grown in long narrow channels. A thin film of water continuously flows down
each channel, providing the plant roots with water, nutrients and oxygen.

TYPES OF AQUAPONIC SYSTEM
• Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS): This technique represents a
unique way for fish farming. Instead of the traditional method of growing fish
outdoors in open ponds this system rears fish at high densities, in indoor
"controlled" environment tanks.

TYPES OF AQUAPONIC SYSTEM
• Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA): This technique involves
cultivating fed species with other varieties of species at various trophic levels
that utilize wastes from aquaculture for their growth.

IRRIGATION SYSTEM
• Rainwater to Drip Irrigation
• Fishery Irrigation Options
• Leveled Drip Irrigation
• Timed Irrigation Systems

MAINTENANCE
• Fish should be fed daily.
• Water quality should be tested.
• Filter screens, filter tanks (if using), tubing, water pump,
grow bed media etc. should be cleaned out as and when
needed.
• Plant & Fish health should be checked.
• Plants should be checked.

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES
• Addresses issues on food safety.
• Maximizes the use of space.
• Ease of Operation
• Addresses issues on climate change
• Products are higher in nutrient and better.
• A great educational tool
• Operation is friendly

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES
DISADVANTAGES
• Can be expensive to setup
• Need a green house
• Requires technical knowledge
• Needs to be constantly monitored
• Aquaponics requires electric energy input
• Have to provide fish food.
• Components fail could lead to the loss.
