CIVIL ENGINEERING
1.0 INTRODUCTION
ETIM, Bassey Bassey obtained her Bachelors (B.Engr.) in Civil Engineering from the University of
Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. She is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering (Structures)
in the University of Lagos, Lagos State, Nigeria. Upon her graduation from the University of Uyo till
date, she has acquired experiences in the design of structures with emphasis on storied buildings,
culverts, simply supported bridge decks and abutments, swimming pools etc. She has also acquired
relevant field experience in the construction of storied buildings. During her work under her
supervising engineer, she was exposed to engineering contracts and the processes involved in
The period after graduation till date has afforded her the opportunity to learn and improve overtime
the capacity to blend the theoretical and practical aspects of civil engineering. She possesses a broad
range of technical and professional effectiveness as well as leadership skills, using rigorous logical
methods for decision making to effectively cope with the dynamic nature of civil engineering
projects. She is able to make the best use of available resources and techniques. She is an enthusiastic
and highly motivated individual who has a clear understanding of the role and responsibilities

residential development. BS 8110 was used to obtain the appropriate load combinations, partial
factors of safety, minimum material properties, maximum bending moment, shears and deflection of
structural members. It also guided design considerations for both the ultimate limit state and
serviceability limit state for all structural elements. Design and detailing of all structural members
3.1.4 Applications of Health, Safety and Environmental Standards to the Area of Practice
Environmental impact assessment (EIA) of the structure was carried out by the client as part of the
due process required by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).
Given all the details from the feasibility studies and approved architectural drawings, detailed
design and drawings were prepared for all structural elements including:
i. Columns
ii. Beams
iii. Slabs (Suspended floor)
iv. Staircase.
v. Foundation (Pile Foundation was recommended and used)
At the initial stage, I had challenges conceptualizing the recommended foundation by the
geotechnical engineer to be used in the design because I had not carried out such a design prior to
that time. The geotechnical report recommended a deep foundation and a raft on pile foundation was
recommended for the design. To handle this challenge, I spoke to my supervising engineer about the
load transfer between the raft and pile foundation. He was very helpful in that he had carried out
such a design before and explained to me that the foundation was in essence a pile foundation with
the ground floor slab designed as a suspended floor carrying live loads and dead loads and the
ground beams carrying the loads from the ground floor slab and its own self weight then transferring
it to the pile caps and from the pile caps to the piles.
He also explained to me that the ground beams apart from supporting the ground floor slab also
served as tie beams, tying the entire floor plan into the pile caps and then to the piles, allowing the
structure to act monolithically. He also sent me construction images of the foundation that assisted
me to get a better pictorial understanding of the design and load transfer mechanism between the
structural elements interacting at the pile points. I also referred to textbooks such as Reinforced
Concrete Design by Engr. (Dr.) Victor Oyenuga for better understanding of pile design and detailing
and also online materials for better understanding of the design. The detailed design was completed
and there has been no issue with the design from the client as he brought in other senior engineers to
vet the design and supervise the construction of the project.
I. Familiarity with structural design codes such as BS 8110 of 1997, and BS 6399 of 1996.
II. Preparation of the structure’s general arrangement drawing in conjunction with approved
architectural drawings.
III. Loading of all structural members with both dead loads and live loads in accordance with
BS 6399 Parts 1 & 2.
IV. Analysis of all structural members for design loads at all states (Ultimate and
serviceability).
V. Checking the suitability of structural members against bending moment, shear force and
crack control.
VI. Designing of structural members in respect to determined dead and live loads, identified
free body diagrams (FBD)/statistical system, dimensioning and appropriate assumptions
for design.
VII. Preparation of detail drawings and bar bending schedule.
CHAPTER FOUR
4.0 CONCLUSION
As I have narrated above in this report, I have gained adequate Work Experience in Civil
Engineering (design, site supervision and office management) as well as knowledge in
procurement matters, project management and contracts administration. I have now managed to
bridge theories and reality on site. I have faced many challenges while implementing projects
and I have also been able to look for the solution to those problems.
Further I certify that, this report results from my involvement in various civil engineering works
carried out and is not copied from any unauthorized materials and thus the activities written in
this report were carried out under close supervision of Registered Engineers.
With regard to the professional engineering work experience I have gained so far, I finally wish
the COREN to consider, evaluate and approve my application for registration as an Engineer.
