GABU
1. Read and analyze the poem “Gabu”. Find and identify the lines that have figurative
devices. Write and discuss the lines and their meanings.
First, “The battering restlessness of the sea” this line is metaphor because sea is implies
direct comparison in life.“Brutal the daylong bshing of its heart” this line is synechdoche
because the brutal bashing is represent life’s chaos. “And drop into the elemental wound”
this is synechdoche because the elemental wound is represent depths of the sea. Lastly, “All
things forfeited are most loved and dear” this line is oxymoron because the word forfeited is
contradict to loved and dear.
The first stanza is about Gabu wich is a place in Ilocos Norte near the sea. Also, when the
typhoons occur, places like this are affected greatly and forms tsunami. The sea is restless and
can be destructive. Sea means life and battering restlessness means impermanent.
The second stanza is about the turmoil of the sea is continuous and powerful. Brutal bashing
means life’s od chaos and element of wound means depth of the sea.
The third stanza is about the sea has been there for centuries. Waste of century means past,
split of salt means bad luck and saltiness of the sea describes it’s darkness.
The fourth stanza is about the brilliance necessary for life that is not there because even the
important things are in our life are gone.
“It is the sea pursues a habit of shores” means that wave show the sea is moving, but always
towards the shore. Just like our life constantly moving but always towards to desire of all of us is
a firm and eternal end.

2. What is the poem all about? What do you think the meaning of the entire poem?

I think the meaning of the entire poem is life can be as restless as the sea, but want stability. Our
life is short so we value it. We must make the change in ourselves at the moment of our lives.
We must also be strong in life because one day we will also find our comfort. As the saying goes
"If the sea finds stability once we recognize the shore, we will find it too".

THIRD WORLD GEOGRAPHY

The theme of this poem is about poverty hunger and hope because when the Philippines
under Martial Law it reminds us of what happened decades ago. The poem describes how the
people suffered at the hands of the abusive and bad government because even if they know the
needs of the people, but they are like a deaf to the poverty and hunger of the people. It also
shows about hope and how people cling to that hope and they are waiting to see if the day will
come when an unbelievable or miracle will happen.
The relevance of the poem to my life is that even though our society suffered from
poverty we still do not lose hope that one day poverty or hunger will be solved in our country.
Because of the poem it made me realize that we must not despair in spite of poverty and in spite
of corrupt government, whatever the problem, big or small, we can overcome it and we will be
free from the burdens because the trials in our lives we can overcome.
The figurative language use in the second stanza is hyperbole. It shows how government
holds the hope of the people and controls them to be discouraged to get for their freedom. And
“country” indicates the Philippines and the phrase “man who watches over it” refers to our
former President Ferdinand Marcos. ” “Only the wind hears your useless words” this line means
that the government seems like a deaf who did not hear the cries of its people. The line
“Thinking of banana trees rotting in the sunlight” symbolizes that there is no hope that make
something better. “You kneel on the parched earth and pray for rice” this line means the hunger
experience those who live in poverty.
The poem is the way it described a country losing its freedom due to its leader but never
losing its hope. We can clearly compare it to the Philippines during Marcos’ regime when
Martial Law was in full effect. Where he was the one in full control of everything. A time that I
personally describe as a time of great deception. Covering up the truth with lies so that it would
seem that he was doing a great job of leading the country. Overall the poem did a great job in
showing a country’s suffering in the hands of a tyrant. It can really be considered an eye-opener
for the youth like me because for me, a millennial, it made me become more aware of things that
happened then and that are happening today.

ANALYSIS OF THE SONG “DADALHIN”
Regine Velasquez is a best-selling Filipino pop singer, recording artist, record producer,
and accomplished actress. In her home country, she is known as "Asia's Songbird" and "The
Queen of Pop." She is celebrated for her vocal range, musical diversity, and her trademark use of
the "belting" technique. She has sold millions of records and is the best-selling artist of all time
in the Philippines, with seven-million certified albums and 1.5 million certified albums
throughout Asia. "Dadalhin," released through Regine's Reigne album back in 2002, is possibly
one o the most iconic and loved single the artist has ever released. It was composed by Tats
Faustino and released on May 2002, and, according to Wikipedia, the "song garnered
[the] biggest airplay in local radio stations in Philippine history and remained number 1 until
after four months.
“Dadalhin” is all about the two people fell in love but the woman thought she had found
"the one," because at first she also felt that the man loved her. The woman hoped and dreamed
that it would be her forever. But in the end, the guy's love is not enough for him to fulfill the
things he promised. His love for the girl is not enough for him to fight for the girl and fulfill the
girl's dream "forever”. I can say in the lyrics that Dadalhin kita sa 'king palasyo, dadalhin
hanggang langit ay manibago ang lahat ng ito'y pinangako mo, dadalhin lang pala ng hangin ang
pangarap ko” it shows that today most women disappointed at the promise they hoped would be
fulfilled. Since I currently studied the different types of figurative devices “Umiiyak-umiiyak
ang puso ko ala-ala pa sa sinabi mo noong nadarama pa ang pagibig mo” this lyrics is a example
of personification that hit me so hard beacause I relate slightly. Learn to promise that we will
keep our tongue in word but indeed for people who love. When someone told you that he loves
you, always think positive about why he expressed his feelings to you. It is because you have
that personality people wished to have and that you make them feel loved. When someone told
you they care, always think that he cares. You test that person by the way they treat you. If they
stand by your side, they care. If they love you, they do everything to make you happy. That
person was chosen for you and you should never ever let that person go. Believe in who you are
and tell yourself that you are worth for someone. Since I currently studied the different types of
figurative devices “Umiiyak-umiiyak ang puso ko ala-ala pa sa sinabi mo noong nadarama pa
ang pagibig mo” this lyrics is a example of personification that hit me so hard beacause I relate
“Dadalhin” reminds me that there is someone out there that loves you not because of your
looks but because of what is inside. Never think negative and always believe that you are special
to someone. You fall in love for a reason and that reason is to express how you feel. Many
people makes you feel lonely but that doesn't last long because there will always be someone that
can make you happy.
