Experiment # 3
RECTILINEAR MOTION

Objectives:
To be able to analyze the body moving in uniform motion in a straight line. To be able to
determine the physical quantities involved such as velocity, displacement, time, and
acceleration.

Apparatus and Materials:

 Stopwatch  Plane
 Dynamic cart  Pulley
 String  Load

Procedures:
A.
1. Assemble the materials/apparatus same as in figure 1.
2. Put a marker on a plane which indicates its distance, ie, starting point is point 1 and end point is
point 2.
3. Put an enough mass/load as my to accelerate the dynamic cart
4. Record the time traveled by the cart in seconds within a certain distance based on the marker
5. Repeat for at least three trials

Conclusion:

The experiment was conducted to study the rectilinear motion of a dynamic cart. The
cart is loaded with a mass (Mass 2) which is attached to it. Another mass (Mass 1) is hanging
from a string which is connected to the cart. The idea is to measure the motion of the dynamic
cart under different conditions of mass and distance. The distance traveled by the cart was
marked and the time taken to travel that distance was recorded. Based on the recorded data,
the velocity and acceleration of the cart were calculated.

Based on the experiment conducted on rectilinear motion, it can be concluded that the
acceleration of a dynamic cart is directly proportional to the force applied to it, which is
determined by the mass (2) of the load placed on it. Additionally, the velocity of the cart is
influenced by the distance traveled and the mass (2) of the load.

To support this, the data shows that a decrease in the mass (2) of the load attached to
the cart results in an increase in its acceleration. Conversely, an increase in the mass of the load
attached to the cart results in a decrease in its acceleration. This is evident from the acceleration
values obtained for both sets of trials. For instance, in the first set of trials where Mass 2 was
500 grams, the acceleration values obtained for distances of 30 cm, 60 cm, and 100 cm were
124.94 cm/sec², 96.14 cm/sec², and 156.25 cm/sec², respectively. While in the second set of
trials where Mass 2 was 100 grams, the acceleration values obtained for distances of 30 cm, 60
cm, and 100 cm were 292.97 cm/sec², 296.2 cm/sec², and 187.65 cm/sec², respectively.

Moreover, the velocity of the cart was found to increase with an increase in the distance
traveled, regardless of the mass of the load. This is evident from the velocity values obtained for
both sets of trials. Additionally, the velocity of the cart was found to increase with a decrease in
the mass of the load attached to it. This is evident from the higher velocity values obtained for
the second set of trials where the mass of the load attached to the cart was set to 100 grams,
from an initial 500 grams.

In conclusion, the experiment conducted on rectilinear motion shows that the

acceleration of a dynamic cart is directly proportional to the force applied to it, which is
determined by the mass (2) of the load placed on it. Additionally, the velocity of the cart is

influenced by the distance traveled and the mass (2) of the load. Therefore, a smaller mass of
the load placed on the cart results in a higher acceleration, while a larger mass of the load
results in a lower acceleration. Also, the velocity of the cart increases with an increase in the
distance traveled, and with a decrease in the mass of the load attached to the cart.
