Document revision Date Description
01 September 2020 Initial release

Product description
This section provides a description of PowerMax, VMAX All Flash, and PowerMaxOS. PowerMaxOS 5978.669.669.

PowerMax
PowerMax 2000 and 8000 deliver the following features:
● A high-performance NVMe backend delivering increased IOPS and lower latency
NVMe is a high-performance protocol that is designed for modern media. It was architected to take advantage of the
parallelism of modern CPUs and SSDs (and other next generation media) to overcome the limitations of storage protocols
designed for hard disk drives.
● Inline deduplication with increased compression
PowerMax platforms exhibit significantly improved data efficiency by using deduplication to reduce the number of duplicate
copies of identical data.
● Higher rack density
● Support for next-generation technologies such as storage class memory (SCM) and NVMe over Fabric (NVMe-oF)

1
PowerMax 2000 supports Open Systems and IBM i and provides:
● 2.7 M IOPS 1
● 1 PBe capacity
● 64 Fibre Channel/iSCSI ports
● 1–2 Bricks
PowerMax 8000 supports Open Systems, IBM i, mainframe, and mixed open and mainframe systems and provides:
● 15 M IOPS 2
● 4 PBe capacity
● 256 Fibre Channel/FICON/iSCSI/FC-NVMe ports
● 1–8 Bricks

VMAX All Flash

VMAX All Flash arrays running PowerMaxOS 5978.669.669 have the same data services as All Flash arrays running HYPERMAX
OS 5977 but with additional enhancements that are available only with PowerMaxOS.
For open systems, VMAX All Flash arrays range in size from single up to two (250F), four (450F) or eight (850F/950F) V-Brick
systems. For mainframe, the VMAX 450F scales up to 4 zBricks (800 TBu per system) and the VMAX 850F/950F scales up to 8
zBricks (1.7 PBu per system). V-Bricks/zBricks and high capacity disk enclosures are consolidated in the same system bay,
providing a dramatic increase in floor tile density.
VMAX All Flash arrays are built on a scaleable architecture. Additional capacity is available as Flash Capacity Packs (open
systems arrays) and zCapacity Packs (mainframe arrays). Additional processing power is available as V-Bricks (open systems
arrays) and zBricks (mainframe arrays). VMAX All Flash arrays come fully preconfigured from the factory, significantly reducing
time to first I/O at installation.

NOTE: VMAX All Flash does not support deduplication or NVMe flash drives.

PowerMaxOS
PowerMaxOS is the software operating environment for PowerMax or VMAX All Flash arrays that are born on PowerMaxOS
5978.669.669 or are upgraded to PowerMaxOS 5978.669.669.

OpenStack

Table 31. OpenStack limitation

Functional area Limitation Affected Platform
OpenStack PowerMaxOS 5978 does not support Workload. VMAX All VMAX All Flash
Flash arrays that have been upgraded to PowerMaxOS and
have existing volume types leveraging Workload (for example,
DSS, DSS_REP, OLTP, and OLTP_REP) will no longer
successfully perform certain operations on existing legacy
volumes, and the volume type will block new volume creations.
Before upgrading a VMAX All Flash array from HYPERMAX OS
5977 to PowerMaxOS 5978 in this scenario, consult with Dell
EMC Customer Service.

Legacy limitations

Table 32. Legacy limitations

Functional area Limitation Affected Platform
Data Services emulation The Data Services emulation I/O statistics for read miss KBs PowerMax and VMAX All Flash
are always reported as zero.
ACLX The Access Control Logix (ACLX) device has a default factory PowerMax and VMAX All Flash
configuration setting of a maximum of one port per Fibre
Channel director to prevent device discovery unavailability
with some operating systems. This configuration can cause
excessive device discovery completion times and/or device
inaccessibility.
You can change the default setting to make the device
accessible on a different port.

Script support There is a system limitation of two concurrent upgrade PowerMax and VMAX All Flash
procedures (Configuration Manager in Solutions Enabler
enables customers to run a maximum of two concurrent
upgrade procedures).
FA statistics management_time, and link_port_time are always reported as PowerMax and VMAX All Flash
zero.
Device allocation The device-per-pool allocated capacity may revert to zero for PowerMax and VMAX All Flash
inactive devices.
