Context Clues are hints that the author gives to help define a difficult or an unusual word. The
clue may appear within the same sentence as the word to which it refers, or it may follow in a
preceding sentence. Because most of your vocabulary is gained through reading, it is important
that you be able to recognize and take advantage of context clues.
Examples:
a. His emaciation, that is, his skeleton-like appearance, was frightening to see.
“Skeleton-like appearance” is the definition of “emaciation.”
2. EXAMPLE CLUES
Sometimes when a reader finds a new word, an example might be found nearby
that helps to explain its meaning. Words like including, such as, and for example, point
out example clues.
Examples:
a. Piscatorial creatures, such as flounder, salmon, and trout, live in the coldest parts
of the ocean. “Piscatorial” obviously refers to fish.
b. Celestial bodies, including the sun, moon, and stars, have fascinated man
through the centuries. “Celestial” objects are those in the sky or heavens.
Use context clues to find meaning of unfamiliar words: definition, exemplification. EN4V-Ia-

A verb (Part of Speech) is a kind of a word that expresses an action or a state of being. There
are two main categories of verbs: action verbs and state of being verbs (also known as
linking verbs).
Verbs come in three tenses: past, present, and future. The past is used to describe things that
have already happened (e.g. yesterday, last week, two years ago). The present tense is used to
describe things that happens now, happens regularly, habitually or things that are continuous.
These are the two important rules in using simple present tense of verbs:
❖ Singular subjects and pronoun she, he, or it use the present singular form of the verbs.
When we talk about a singular subject, -s or –es is added to a verb.
❖ Plural subjects take the base form of the verb when expressing present tense.
