CONTEXT CLUES

Background Information for Learners

Context Clues are hints that the author gives to help define a difficult or an unusual word. The
clue may appear within the same sentence as the word to which it refers, or it may follow in a
preceding sentence. Because most of your vocabulary is gained through reading, it is important
that you be able to recognize and take advantage of context clues.

Some types of context clues

1. DEFINITION / DESCRIPTION CLUE

The new term may be formally defined, or sufficient explanation may be given
within the sentence or in the following sentence. Clues to definition include “that is,”
commas, dashes, and parentheses.

Examples:

a. His emaciation, that is, his skeleton-like appearance, was frightening to see.
“Skeleton-like appearance” is the definition of “emaciation.”

b. Fluoroscopy, examination with a fluoroscope, has become a common practice.

The commas placed before and after “examination with a fluoroscope” point out
the definition of “fluoroscopy.”

2. EXAMPLE CLUES
Sometimes when a reader finds a new word, an example might be found nearby
that helps to explain its meaning. Words like including, such as, and for example, point
out example clues.

Examples:

a. Piscatorial creatures, such as flounder, salmon, and trout, live in the coldest parts
of the ocean. “Piscatorial” obviously refers to fish.

b. Celestial bodies, including the sun, moon, and stars, have fascinated man
through the centuries. “Celestial” objects are those in the sky or heavens.

USE ADJECTIVES (DEGREE OF COMPARISON, ORDER) IN
SENTENCES

Background Information for Learners

ADJECTIVES – are words that describe nouns or pronouns. They tell about the kind, color, or
number of a noun or pronoun. When several adjectives are used in one sentence , the order of
adjectives is as follows: number, kind, quality, and color.

Adjectives have also three degrees of comparison, namely positive degree, comparative degree,
and superlative degree.

The three degrees of adjectives are the following:

1. Positive Degree - We use positive degree if we are describing only one person, place,
animal, or thing.

Example: The atis tree is tall.

2. Comparative Degree – We use comparative degree if we describe or compare two
persons, places, animals, or things.

Example:
1. The Mango tree is taller than the atis tree. (Add –er for one syllable adjectives.)
2. Carlos is more obedient than Sonia. (Add more for two or more syllabled –

SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE OF VERBS

Background Information for Learners

A verb (Part of Speech) is a kind of a word that expresses an action or a state of being. There
are two main categories of verbs: action verbs and state of being verbs (also known as
linking verbs).

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

PAST FORM OF REGULAR AND IRREGULAR VERBS

Background Information for Learners

• Regular verbs – use –ed or –d to tell past actions. The spelling changes when we add
–ed or –d.
a. Regular verbs of one syllable that end in a consonant with a vowel before it, form
their past tense by doubling the consonant before adding –ed. (Examples: rob-
robbed; skip-skipped)
b. Regular verbs that end in e, form their past tense by adding –d. (Examples: love-
loved; race-raced)
c. Regular verbs that end in y with a consonant before it, form their past tense by
changing y to i then adding –ed. (Examples: cry-cried; study-studied)
d. Regular verbs that end in y with a vowel before it, form their past tense by just
adding –ed. (Examples: play-played; stay-stayed)
• Most Irregular verbs change their spelling when they form their past tense.
• A few have the same form in both present and past tense. Examples: put-put; read-
read, cut-cut
