READINGS IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY

Lesson 7
Pagsasarili at Pambansang Pagpapasya (1945-1972)

In my opinion for this topic it is very familiar for us for being a Filipino because of the
word aswang. The book entitled “Aswang ng C.I.A Si General Lansdale at ang kaniyang
combat Psywar kontra Huk” is about the shape shifting evil creatures in Filipino folklore
called aswang and it says that the C.I.A or Central Intelligence Agency is said to be
responsible for the spread of beliefs about aswang among us. In the Philippines, aswang
is a legendary belief that until now most Filipino still believe to this.

In this book, it enlightens me about the main character General Edward Lansdale, he
was a United States Air Force officer until retiring in 1963 as a major general before
continuing his work with the Central Intelligence Agency. Lansdale played a significant
role in suppressing the Huk insurgency in the Philippines. Lansdale served with the
Office of Strategic Services in World War II ultimately being promoted to major.
Lansdale extended his tour to remain in the Philippines until 1948, helping the Philippine
Army rebuild its intelligence services and resolve the cases of large numbers of prisoners
of war.

In conclusion, it very important to us as a student to learn and understand our beliefs

and myths in the history of our own country and to General Lansdale even though he is a
United States Air force officer he still served to our country.
