Melaka Smkgajahberang Mathst P3 2014 Qa Section A (45 Marks)
2. In a restaurant, 45% of the customers pay the bill by using a credit card.
a) If 5 of the customers are chosen at random, find the probability that at most 3 customers pay
the bill by using a credit card. [3 marks]
b) If 300 customers are randomly chosen from the restaurant, use an approximation probability
distribution to find the value of k so that the probability at least k customers pay their bills
by using a credit card is 0.8. [5 marks]
3. A continuous random variable X has the cumulative distribution for F(x) given by
0 , x<0
1
𝑥 , 0≤𝑥 <2
4
2
F(x) = h(𝑥 − 4) + 1, 2≤𝑥 <4
1 , x≥ 4
where h is a constant. Find
a) the value of h. Hence sketch the graph of F(x). [3 marks]
b) the probability distribution function f(x) of X. [2 marks]
c) E(x). [3 marks]
4. In a particular fruit farm, the weights of the mangoes are normally distributed with a mean of
400 gm and a variance of 500 gm2 . Sixty samples of size 30 are taken from this population.
Find the
(a) probability that the sample mean is not more than 405 gm [3 marks]
(b) number of samples that have sample mean not more than 405 gm [2 marks]
(c) minimum sample mean w if 5% of the sampling are of grade A. [3 marks]
5. With an intention to discourage Mary from driving to her work place in a busy town, Mary’s
father claims that on average a person takes 20 minutes to find a parking space in the area. Mary
disagrees and she takes a random sample of 30 times that she drove to work. She found that the
mean time taken to find a parking space is 17 minutes. Assuming that the time taken to find a
parking space follows a normal distribution with standard deviation equal to 10 minutes. Test, at
the 5 % level of significance, whether Mary’s father is overstating the mean time taken to find a

Section B [ 15 marks]
Answer only one question in this section.
7. A bag contains 32 scarves as shown in the following table.
(i) the proportion of the group of students who are overweight or obese [2 marks]
(ii) the standard error [2 marks]
(iii) the level of significance α [3 marks]
b) The random variable X has unknown population mean µ and unknown standard deviation .
From a sample of 50 observations of X taken,
(i) Find the unbiased estimates of the population mean and population variance [4 marks]
2
(ii) Find the 95% confidence interval for the population mean µ. [4 marks]
