HL1005 Introduction to Singapore Literature

- Essay Assignment due date: 6 March 2023


- Submit 1 softcopy to Turnitin (accessible from 10.30am to 1pm on 6 March) and 1 hardcopy to
your tutor during tutorial.
- 1200 words (+/- 10%)
- No more than 2 secondary sources*

Close read one prescribed text in relation to any topic on the syllabus. Please take into consideration
the following factors when drafting and revising your essay.

1. Your essay should be about 1200 words and should only focus on a single work (including the
non-examinable film) on the syllabus.
2. You are not required to use any secondary sources but may choose to do so if you think it will
strengthen your argument. Do not use more than 2 secondary sources*.
3. Make sure that your title reflects the content of the essay.
4. Format the essay according to MLA conventions.
5. Underline your thesis statement

Factors that will be taken into account in the grading of your essay:

1) Topic focus
2) Knowledge and understanding
3) Originality of argument and/or execution of concept
4) Analysis and close reading of texts
5) Engagement with secondary texts*
6) Structure
7) Grammar, spelling, and form
8) Style and expression
9) Referencing and bibliography
10) Presentation
Important Notice for Essay Assignment

 Your first stop of consultation should be with your TAs. All students who need to consult should
send an email at least 3 working days ahead of time. Email queries are only acceptable if they do
not involve lengthy discussion sessions to avoid miscommunication. Please allow at least a day
or two for responses to emails (with the exception of weekends and public holidays).

 Please take a moment to acknowledge emails from your professors and TAs when they respond
to your emails.

 Consultations: Please come prepared with questions/an essay outline so that your TAs can
address your concerns effectively and efficiently. Out of consideration for your classmates who
may also need consultation time, each consultation should be limited to about 20 minutes.
 All materials used in lectures and tutorials are for circulation within the class only. They are not
to be re-distributed outside of class for any other purposes. If you wish to use the materials for
your assignments, you must cite them accordingly.

 Late assignments: Written assignments that are submitted late will receive a penalty of half a
grade each day (including weekends and holidays); if I do not receive an assignment a week
after it is due, you will receive a 0 for the essay.

 Any attempt at plagiarism will be subjected to university disciplinary action.
