SCOPE:
This specification covers the requirements for 8630 Modified Grade low alloy steel forgings,
for manufacturing equipment such as Wellheads, X-mas Trees and auxiliary equipment and
parts that meet API Specifications 6A and 17D for oil/gas producing environments including
sour producing conditions (NACE).

It is relevant to pressure containing equipment where mechanical testing is performed on test


samples produced from a PROLONGATION of the heat treated forging. This specification, MS-
592 is equivalent to MS-528 with testing specification PS-217; with the additional requirement
for test samples extracted from forging prolongations integral with the forging during heat
treatment.

MECHANICAL PROPERTIES:

Steels purchased to this specification shall have mechanical properties within the range
specified below:

HARDNESS TESTING:
Surface hardness testing shall be conducted by the Brinell Hardness test method as per ASTM
Standard E 10 using a 3,000 kg load.

In addition to surface hardness, hardness testing may be required on specific items, and in
which case the purchase order shall state it as additional requirement. When such testing is
specified, hardness tests shall be conducted at a minimum of 3 test locations, viz., near ID,
near OD, and the mid-wall of hollow cylindrical shapes, and the center, the OD, and at the half
radius locations of round bars. Hardness test shall be conducted by the Brinell Test Method or
by the Rockwell Method. Tests shall be performed on both end faces of the raw material.
Hardness of the material shall not exceed 22 HRC or equivalent Brinell Hardness Number.

If impractical to perform testing by the standard Brinell Test Method (due to size restrictions),
parts may be tested by a portable hardness test method with approval from KOP.

IMPACT TOUGHNESS:

Material shall be Charpy impact tested at –20oC (-4oF) as per ASTM Standard A-370. For
longitudinal specimens, the minimum average (of 3 tests) energy absorption at test temperature
shall be 42 Joules (31 ft-lbs) average of three, with single minimum of 30 Joules (22 ft-lbs).

ALLOWABLE MELTING PRACTICES:


Material shall be produced via an electric furnace melting practice followed by Vacuum
Degassing (VD), Argon-stirred Degassing, Argon Oxygen Decarburization (AOD), Electroslag
Remelting (ESR) or Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR). Supplier shall identify and document the
specific melting practices that are used.

HOT WORKING PRACTICES:


Materials shall be of pressure vessel quality, and shall be produced by hot working practices
that produce a wrought structure throughout the entire part. For forgings, the minimum
acceptable hot work ratio (relative to ingot size) shall be 3.5.

The steel processing shall produce a fine-grained microstructure with grain size equal to or finer
than ASTM Grain Size No. 7. The supplier must identify and document the specific hot working
practice used, and report the hot working ratio.

Supplier of the material shall report the grain size of the finished product, or report the prior
austenitic grain size in the finished product. For acceptance, the prior austenitic grain size shall
be equal to Grain Size No. 4 or finer (target being No. 5 or finer).

HEAT TREATMENT:
Heat treatment of forgings shall include normalizing, austenitizing, quenching, and tempering as
specified herein.

Normalize in the range of 1650oF - 1750oF for a minimum time at temperature


of 1/2 hour per inch of maximum section thickness

Austenitize in the range of 1600oF - 1700oF. for a minimum time at temperature


of 1/2 hour per inch of maximum section thickness

Water and/or polymer quench


Maximum Quench Temperatures - 100oF Start and 120oF Finish

Temper at 1200oF - 1300oF for a minimum time at temperature


of 1 hour per inch of maximum section thickness

TEST COUPON/QUALIFICATION TEST COUPON:


Physical properties shall be measured on test specimens taken from Test Coupons (TC) or
Qualification Test Coupons (QTC) produced from prolongations after final heat treatment with
default minimum requirements as set forth by API 6A and API 17.

NOTE: Specific additional requirements or modified requirements regarding test


coupons, if any, shall be attached as an Appendix to this specification on a purchase
order basis.

NDE REQUIREMENTS:
Ultrasonic testing, if required, shall be listed as a special requirement on the purchase order. If
specified, raw material purchased to this specification shall be UT tested in accordance with the
requirements of ASTM Standards, A 388, A 609, and E 428 using the following flat-bottom hole
criteria:

Metal thickness 1.0 through 1.5 inches: 1/16 - inch


Metal thickness 1.5 through 6.0 inches: 1/8 - inch
Metal thickness above 6.0 inches: 1/4 - inch

Products shall as a minimum meet the acceptance criteria for API 6A PSL-3 components.

Surface NDE, if required, shall be conducted using wet fluorescent magnetic particle inspection
following the ASTM Standard E 709, and the acceptance criteria shall be per API 6A/17D and
based on the PSL of the component.

Raw material shall be visually inspected for defects and shall be free of surface discontinuities
such as cracks, seams or laps.

Raw material may be subject to KOP inspection using any or all of the above methods, and
presence of any unacceptable defects may be cause for rejecting the material, and KOP
reserves the right to return the item to the mill or vendor.

WELD REPAIR:

If repair by welding is necessary, vendor shall submit the details regarding the repair, proposed
welding procedure(s) and shall obtain written approval from KOP before repair welding. No
weld repair shall be permitted on PSL-4 components.

MATERIAL CERTIFICATION:
Raw materials and associated test samples shall be traceable to the heat from which they are
made, and the heat treat lot with all required documents per API 6A as a minimum. The vendor
shall supply the necessary documents which shall include:

Chemical Composition, melt practice, hot working practice, specifics of heat treatment, Physical
properties (tensile properties, impact toughness at a specified test temperature, hardness test
results), ASTM Grain size, and NDE (if applicable) results.

IDENTIFICATION AND MARKING:

Each piece of raw material and the test coupon shall have the following information low-stress
stamped on one of the end faces of the part:

KOP Part Identification No.


Mill Heat No./Heat Treat Lot or Batch No.
KOP Material Specification Number, as appears on this specification

Test coupon/qualification test coupon (or portions thereof) if furnished with the raw material,
shall be identified by KOP Part No.-TC/QTC, and shall be traceable just as the raw material.

RESPONSIBILITY:

Quality Assurance - KOP shall be responsible for the proper administration of this specification.
Quality Assurance shall be responsible for the proper implementation of this specification.

At facilities in which the Quality Assurance and Quality Control functions are one, the quality
function at that facility shall be responsible for both duties as specified by this procedure.

PROLONGATION PROCESS PROCEDURE:

1) The prolongation TC/QTC shall have the same forging ratio as the part(s) they qualify.

2) The prolongation shall be integral to the component it qualifies in such a manner that the
prolongation shall have no consequential effect on the integrity of the production items.

3) "NO" welding shall be allowed on a prolongation.

4) The prolongation shall be heat treated as an integral extension on the part it qualifies.

5) Heat treatment of the parts with prolongations shall be in accordance with the guidelines
established in KOP Technical Specification QS-040.

6) A minimum of two hardness tests shall be taken on the forging and prolongation after the
final heat treatment cycle. Hardness shall be in accordance with KOP Technical
Specification PS-113.

7) Tensile and Impact Testing required to qualify the material, shall be in accordance with
section titled TENSILE AND IMPACT TEST SPECIMENS thru section titled IMPACT
TEST PROCEDURE.

TENSILE AND IMPACT TEST SPECIMENS:


1) When tensile and/or impact test specimens are required, they shall be removed from the
integral prolongation on the thickest part of the forging after the final heat treatment cycle.

2) Test specimens shall be removed from the integral prolongation such that the tensile
specimen gage length and Charpy V-Notch root are at least 1/4T from the end of the
prolongation.

3) The prolongation shall meet the requirements established in the section regarding
prolongation process procedures.

4) Tensile and impact specimens shall be removed from the prolongation as indicated below:

a) For a solid forging, the test specimens shall be taken with their longitudinal centerline
axis wholly within the center core 1/4T envelope location on the prolongation.
b) For a hollow forging, the longitudinal centerline of the specimens shall be within 1/8" of
the midthickness of the prolongation at its thickest section.

c) All specimens to be removed 1/4T minimum from all heat treatment surfaces and with
their centerline within 3mm of the mid-thickness of the prolongation.

5) The tensile specimen shall be the standard size 0.505" diameter, as per ASTM A 370,
unless the physical configuration of the prolongation prevents their use. Then the standard
sub-size diameter specimens per ASTM A 370 shall be used. Sub-size tensile specimens
CANNOT be used for qualifying material to Product Specification Level 4.

6) The impact specimen shall be the standard size 10 x 10 mm square, as per ASTM A 370,
except where there is insufficient material, in which case the next smaller standard size
specimen obtainable shall be used. Sub-size impact specimens CANNOT be used for
qualifying material to Product Specification Level 4.

TENSILE TEST PROCEDURE:

1) Tensile test shall be performed at room temperature in accordance with the procedures
specified in ASTM A 370.

2) A minimum of one tensile test shall be performed. The results of the tensile test shall
satisfy the applicable requirements of the KOP Technical Specification.

3) If the results of the tensile test do not satisfy the Specification, two additional tests may be
performed in an effort to qualify the material. The results of both of these tests shall satisfy
the specification requirements or the material cannot be qualified.

IMPACT TEST PROCEDURE:


1) Impact testing shall be performed in accordance with the procedures specified in ASTM
A 370 using the Charpy V-notch technique.

2) Full size Charpy V-notch impact tests shall be performed per ASTM A 370. Test
specimens
shall be taken in the longitudinal direction.

EQUIPMENT CALIBRATION:

All equipment used shall fall under a Gage Calibration Program.

NONCONFORMANCES:

Nonconformances shall be handled in accordance with the guidelines established in KOP


Technical Specification QS-028.

REPORTS:
Reports shall contain all applicable information per the appropriate KOP Technical
Specification.
