Addition is knowing the parts and wanting the total.

Subtraction is knowing the total and one part and wanting to know the other part

Models for addition and subtraction:

Process to teach:

1. Concrete — modelling with materials
Use a variety of verbal problem situations and manipulative materials to
act out and model each operation.

1. Pictorial — representing with pictures .

Provide representations of objects in pictures, diagrams and drawings to
move a step away from the concrete toward symbolic
representation.
1. Abstract — representing with symbols .
Use symbols (especially numeric expressions and number sentences) to
illustrate each operation.

Stages of teaching and learning:

• Explore: Use concrete materials, stories, discussions and visual aids

or models.
• Reinfore: Make links between concrete and symbolic.
• Practice:Use games, worksheets and other learning activities to
allow students to apply and demonstrate their knowledge. At this
stage, the focus is on mental recall, i.e., students do know use
concrete materials etc.
• Extend: Apply the strategy to numbers beyond the basic facts.

Basic facts startegies:

Remenber to ask how they reach the solution
• Count On (+1, +2, +3)
Teaching activity:
If I have five apples inside this box, and I am going to put two inside, how
many in total in the box? (count from 5, 6, 7)

• Doubles (e.g., 1+1, 2+2, 3+3…)

• Near Double (e.g., 3 + 4 = Double + 1, 3 + 5 = Double + 2)
• Bridge to 10

• Laminated Ten frames

• Think addition (for subtraction facts)
Use the inverse relationship to consider addition strategies and addtion
facts
