THE SECRETARY-GENERAL
OF THE INTERNATIONAL
MARITIME ORGANIZATION
MR. KOJI SEKIMIZU
On the social side, as the delivery mechanism for global trade, international
maritime transport supports and sustains a huge number of wealth-creating
and poverty-alleviating activities in both developed and developing countries.
Shipping provides job opportunities to people around the world. More than 1.5
million people are employed as seafarers and the vast majority of them are from
developing countries. And, if the world economy continues to grow, more highly
trained and qualified seafarers will be needed. To meet the demands of growth,
more than 50,000 new seafarers are needed every year. Related activities such
as shipbuilding, ship repair and ship recycling provide more jobs to people in
developing countries and will contribute towards achieving the Millennium
Development Goals.
