Tutorial 2 – Inductor and Inductance

1) A magnetic core is built in the form of circular

ring having a mean radius of 𝑅 = 5.0 𝑐𝑚, while the
inner core has a radius of r = 0.5 cm. A coil
containing 𝑁 = 100 𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑠 is wound uniformly
throughout the length of the core. The coil is
connected to a voltage supply and it draws a
current of 1.0A.

a) Determine the magnetic flux in the core

with r= 50,
b) Calculate the self-inductance of the coil
(assuming that it is an air-core)
c) Calculate the self-inductance of the coil Fig 1 Circular ring magnetic

d) Given that the magnetic core is made of
nickel, r= 50, determine the inductance of the core
e) Calculate the energy delivered to the inductor (coil around the nickel core) if the
voltage is applied over the time period of 𝑡0 = 0𝑠 to 𝑡1 = 2.0 𝑚𝑠 where current
varies from 𝑖0 = 0.1𝐴 to 𝑖1 = 1.0𝐴?

[Ans(a) 1.57Wb (b) 3.14H (c) 0.157 mH (d) 0.157mH (e) 0.0777mJ]

2) The flux density β is normal to the plane of the rectangular loop with a winding of
N=10 and directed outward as shown in Fig 2 and it is equal to 𝛽 = 𝛽0 sin 𝜔𝑡 𝑢̂

𝛽0 = maximum value of flux density in tesla

𝜔= constant radian frequency =5.0 rad/s
𝑡 = times in seconds
𝑢̂= unit vector normal to the loop

(a) Find an expression for the induced emf,

(b) If the resistor R= 100Ω is connected between the terminals of x and y, determine
the magnitude and the direction of the current in the resistor at t = 0 and at t =
/15 s

3) A hollow air cored inductor coil consists of 100

turns of copper wire which produces a
magnetic flux of 20 Wb and attained a current
of 5.0A at time,𝑡2 = 10𝑚𝑠. The switch was
toggled when 𝑡1 = 5.0 𝑚𝑠. Calculate the (a) self-
inductance of the coil (b) the value of the self-
induced emf produced in the coil after a period

(e) Calculate the energy delivered to the inductor (coil around the machine steel
core) if the voltage is applied over the time period of 𝑡0 = 0𝑠 to 𝑡2 = 10.0 𝑚𝑠 where
current varies from 𝑖0 = 0𝐴 to 𝑖2 = 5.0𝐴?

4) Consider the air solenoid with two coils, C1 and

C2 wrapped around it. The number of turns of the
coils are given by 𝑁1 = 50 and 𝑁2 = 100 . The
length of the coils are both 𝐿1 = 𝐿2 = 10𝑐𝑚 with
cross-sectional area of 𝐴 = 0.1𝑚2 . Given that the
current 𝑖1 = 0.05𝐴 and 𝑖2 = 0.20𝐴 Find the
