1. Outline
ACR Diagnostic Function has the following 4 modules.

(1) Thickness (Slice Thickness Accuracy)

For the image acquired by scanning the ACR phantom, slice thickness is calculated from
pixels in the set ROI.

(2) Uniformity (Image Intensity Uniformity)

A circle ROI with 20000mm2 ~ 21500mm2 is set on the image for measurement of
uniformity. In this ROI, a mean value in a circle ROI with 100mm2 for the maximum
signals and a mean value in another circle ROI with 100mm2 for minimum signals in each
are calculated to calculate the uniformity.

(3) Ghosting (Percent Signal Ghosting)

A circle ROI with 20000 mm2 ~ 21500 mm2 and four oval ROIs with 1000 mm2 each for
measurement of background signals are set on the image for ghost measurement, and a
mean value of each ROI is calculated to calculate the ghosting.

(4) Positioning AID ( Positioning AID for Phantom Setting)

Test result by using the ACR phantom greatly depends on the position and inclination of
the phantom. Therefore, the phantom must be positioned appropriately at the center of
the magnetic field accurately. Set an ROI at the center of the phantom image.

2. Thickness
Thickness is calculated from pixels in the set ROI on the loaded image.

(1) Click on the Maintenance Card button① to open the Maintenance Card.

(2) Click on the tag② of ACR Diag..

(3) Read a series of the images to be processed in the Control Face.

(4) Select Thickness in the pull-down menu③.

(5) Two double rectangular ROIs (ROI-A④ and ROI-B⑤) are displayed at the center of the
screen. Operating the mouse, position the ROI-A and ROI-B at the positions where the
rectangular ROIs are measured. Each of the ROIs can be magnified, minified, moved and
rotated as shown in Fig. 2. The inner rectangular ROI can be magnified and minified by
operating the mouse. Coordinates, width and height are displayed at ⑥ and ⑦.

(6) Press the WW/WL Set button⑧. Set window width to 1 and window level to a 1/2 of the
mean value of the pixels in the ROI-A and ROI-B.

(7) Pressing the Start button⑨ calculates Thickness.

(8) In calculation of Thickness, mean profile is created for each of the rectangles outside the
ROI-A and B as shown in Fig. 3.

-2- Q1E-BM5292
From FWHM of this mean profile, distance FWHMa and FWHMb are calculated.

(9) FWHM of the ROI-A and B is shown in ⑩.

(10) Thickness is calculated by using the following formula.

Thickness = 0.2× (FWHMa × FWHMb/(FWHMa + FWHMb))

(11) The resultant Thickness is displayed at ⑩ and image.

(12) The ROI can be reset to the initial setting by the Reset ROIs button⑪.

3. Uniformity
An ROI is set on the image for measurement of uniformity, and by calculating a mean value
in an ROI with the minimum signals and a mean value in an ROI with the maximum signals
in this ROI, uniformity (PIU: Percent integral uniformity) is calculated.

(1) Click on the Maintenance Card button① to open the Maintenance Card.

(2) Click on the tag② of ACR Diag..

(3) Read a series of the images to be processed in the Control Face.

(4) Select Uniformity in the pull-down menu③.

(5) By operating the mouse, magnify or minify the ROI-A⑤ (20000 ~ 21500mm2), change
its position and set this ROI at the center of the phantom image. The data of the
ROI-A (position, area and mean value) are displayed at ⑩ .

(6) From the pull-down menu, select the desired operation④ for the ROI-B and ROI-C.

-4- Q1E-BM5292
3-1 Manual Mode:

(1) Operating the mouse, set circle ROI-B and ROI-C with 100mm2 in the ROI-A.
The data of the ROI-B and ROI-C are displayed at ⑪ and ⑫ respectively.

(2) Click on the Start button⑧.

By setting the area where a mean value of signals in the circle area of the ROI-B and
ROI-C is small as (Low) and the area with a larger value as (High), uniformity is
displayed⑨.
The uniformity (PIR) is obtained by the following formula.

PIR = 100 × (1- {(High - Low)/(High + Low)})

(3) Clicking the Reset ROIs button resets each ROI to the initial setting.

3-2 Auto Mode:

(1) Click on the Start button⑧ .The area (Low) where the mean value of the signals in a
circle area with 100mm2 is minimum in the ROI-A is automatically searched and set
as ROI-B⑥, and the area (High) where the means value of the signals in a circle area
with 100mm2 is maximum in the ROI-A is automatically searched and set as ROI-C⑦,
and then the uniformity is displayed⑨. The data of the ROI-B and ROI-C are
displayed at ⑪ and ⑫ respectively.

The uniformity (PIR) is obtained by the following formula.

PIR = 100 × (1- {(High - Low)/(High + Low)})

(2) Clicking the Reset ROIs button resets each ROI to the initial setting.

-5- Q1E-BM5292
4. Ghosting
A large ROI and four ROIs for measurement of background signals are set on the image for
measurement of ghost, and by calculating mean values of these ROIs, ghost is calculated.

(5) Operating the mouse, magnify or minify the ROI-A④ (20000 ~ 21500mm2) and change its
position to set this ROI at the center of the phantom image. The data (position, area and
mean value) of the ROI-A are displayed at ⑨.

(6) With care not to produce noise in ROI, move and rotate the ROI-B⑤ (top), ROI-C⑥ (left),
ROI-D ⑦ (btm) and ROI-E⑧ (right) with an area of 1000mm2 each for measurement of
background signals to set their positions. The data of the ROI-B ~ E are displayed at ⑩
~ ⑬.

(7) Click on the Start button⑭.

Ghosting Ratio is displayed at ⑮.
Ghosting Ratio is obtained by the following formula.

Ghosting Ratio = abs(((top + btm) - (left + right)) / (2 × (LargeROI)))

(8) Clicking on the Reset ROIs button⑯ resets each ROI to the initial setting.

5. Positioning AID
Set the phantom image at the center of an ROI. Use the image to adjust position and
inclination of the phantom and to aid its verification.
