1. For 𝑥 > 0, 𝑏 > 0, and 𝑏 ≠ 1, 𝒚 = 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝒃 𝒙 is equivalent to 𝒙 = 𝒃𝒚 .

2. If 𝑏 > 0, 𝑏 ≠ 1, and 𝑥 > 0, then the logarithmic function with base 𝑏 is 𝑓(𝑥) = log 𝑏 𝑥.
3. The graph of 𝑓(𝑥) = log 𝑏 𝑥 has the following characteristics:
1
• The graph passes through the points (𝑏 − 1) , (1,0), and (𝑏, 1).
• The domain is (0, ∞), and the range is (−∞, ∞).
• 𝑓 is increasing when 𝑏 > 1; 𝑓 is decreasing when 0 < 𝑏 < 1.
• The 𝑦 −axis is a vertical asymptote.
4. The natural logarithmic function is defined by 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝒆 𝒙 = 𝐥𝐧 𝒙 , 𝑥 > 0.
5. In graphing logarithmic functions of the form 𝑓(𝑥) = log 𝑏 𝑥, a table of values for 𝑦 = 𝑏 𝑥 may
be constructed. Then, the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑏 𝑥 is reflected across the line 𝑦 = 𝑥 to obtain the graph
of 𝑓(𝑥) = log 𝑏 𝑥.
6. Another method to graph logarithmic functions of the form 𝑓(𝑥) = log 𝑏 𝑥 is to create a table
of values such that 𝑥 − values are chosen to be powers of 𝑏 to easily find needed logarithms.
Plot the points on the coordinate plane and connect with a smooth curve.
