ACTIONS NEEDED FOR A SUSTAINABLE MARITIME TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM
A Sustainable Maritime Transportation System
must cover a broad range of activities, over some
of which IMO has traditionally only had marginal
influence. In presenting this vision of a Sustainable
Maritime Transportation System, the intention is not
to broaden the scope of IMO’s activities, but rather
to widen awareness of the importance of the System
through increased understanding of the coordination
opportunities the System provides – at the regional,
sub-regional and national levels and at both Government
and industry level.
The following are some of the ‘imperatives’ or overall
goals that IMO, in partnership with others, must
aspire to in order to establish a Sustainable Maritime
Transportation System. They should be read in
conjunction with the Annex to this document, where
specific actions and relevant actors for each of the goals
are identified.
