THE WONDERFUL HUMMINGBIRD

It is a species of hummingbird of medium size (up to 15
cm) and blue, green and copper colors with a violet crest,
the only member of the genus Loddigesia. This bird is
endemic to the Utcubamba river basin, in the high jungle
of northern Peru. It was discovered in 1853 by bird
collector Andrew Matthews for George Loddiges.

The paddletail hummingbird is unique among birds in that

it has only four tail feathers. Its most prominent feature is
the presence in the male of two long outer racket-shaped
tail feathers that intersect each other and end in large
purplish-blue discs or 'spatulas', which can move
independently.

BECAUSE THEY ARE IMPORTANT?

For example, hummingbirds offer ecological
services, one of the most important being
pollination, a process that occurs because they
need nectar to survive and when they obtain it,
they visit the plants that, in turn, need someone to
pollinate them. The protein is obtained through
insects".

THREATS
The Marvelous Hummingbird is another of the
Peruvian animal species in danger of extinction,
due to constant forest depredation, which damages
its habitat. Its exuberant tail puts it in danger of
being hunted. There is even a certain absurd belief
that the dry hearts of males are an aphrodisiac.
