Theme : Identities and Relationships

PROGRAMME :

INTRODUCTION
English Drama is one of the cocurricular activities encouraged by the Ministry of
Education. TKC Inter-batch English Drama Competition has been held annually and is
anticipated by all TKC students. Throughout the year , TKC Inter-batch English Drama
competition has successfully served as a platform for students to demonstrate and expose their
creativity and talents. Drama also motivates students to use English and therefore improves
their command of the language.
This year, the theme of the competition is aligned with one of the MYPIB global contexts
which is “Identities and Relationship”. It is hoped that all students involved will be able to
engage themselves in the theme that will enable them to explore the broader perspective of the
chosen context.

OBJECTIVES :
1. To support the Education Ministry in its effort to encourage and increase the use of English
language amongst students.
2. To encourage students to appreciate and at the same time stimulate their interest for
literature :drama as it promotes solidarity and inculcates moral values.
3. To enable students to explore MYPIB global context meaningfully.
4. To provide an opportunity for students and teachers to reveal their talents and creativity in the
art of dramatization, the usage of English in the aspects of script writing, stage management and
other technical fields.
5. To enhance self-concept, self-confidence and self-esteem amongst students.
6. To strengthen ties amongst students.

DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED PROGRAMME:


Overview:
This competition is open to all students from Forms 1 to 5 of Kolej Tunku Kurshiah in year 2020.

Proposed Staging Date : 7 August 2021 ( Saturday)/ 10.00 a.m. -12.30p.m.


1 GENERAL RULES
1.1 The entire performance should not exceed 30 minutes
 5 minutes to set up the props and backdrops
 and 5 minutes to clear the settings and props
 time allocated for the performance on the stage is 20 minutes
1.2 The theme of the drama is ’ Identities and Relationships ’ .
1.3 Each team must perform a song related to a scene in the drama. The singing can be
solo, duo, trio or in group.
1.4 Participating teams must use minimal props for the drama in which only a maximum of
8 props are allowed.
1.5 Participating teams are encouraged to use original scripts. Nevertheless, translated
scripts or interpretation of established plays are allowed.
1.6 Drama scripts and synopsis should be typed using Font 12 Time New Roman on A4
paper and sent to the Organising Committee two weeks before the competition.
1.7 Judging is based on these criteria:-
1.7.1 Creativity of Drama 35%
1.7.2 Language 30%
1.7.3 Overall Coordination & Presentation 25%
1.7.4 Positive Values/Message 10%
Total 100%
1.8 Teams which do not abide to the rules will be disqualified.

Contingency plan : If the school is closed due to Covid 19, the competition will be held via zoom.
Each batch needs to adapt their play into zoom theatre format.

2 GUIDELINES
2.1 Language
2.1.1 It is compulsory to use English language throughout the drama presentation.
Nevertheless, limited use of certain Malay registers is allowed.
2.1.2 Use of vulgar words is strictly prohibited.
2.1.3 Scripts must not touch on sensitive issues such as race, religion, politics, colour,
personalities, etc.
2.2 Theme
2.2.1 The drama must portray the selected theme. This criterion will be evaluated
through the script and presentation.
2.2.2 Themes must not touch on sensitive issues such as race, religion, politics, colour,
personalities, etc.
2.3 Costumes
2.3.1 Participants should wear appropriate and decent clothes that suit the characters
they portray.
2.4 Set and Props
2.4.1 Minimise the use of set and props.
2.4.2 Sets and props should not hinder the movement of the team members on stage.
2.4.3 Use of sharp objects (such as knives, keris, etc), fire, inflammable and dangerous
chemical substances are strictly prohibited.
2.4.4 Each team is responsible for the setting up (5 minutes) and clearing of sets and
props (5 minutes).
2.4.5 Safety of sets and props should be ensured at all times.
2.5 Music
2.5.1 Each team should have technical assistant(s) to coordinate music and recordings.
2.5.2 All equipment and its operation is the responsibility of every participating team.
2.6 Lighting and Additional Equipment for Special Effects.
2.6.1 Participants can utilise their own additional equipment. However, the equipment
used must be suitable on stage and does not disrupt the flow of the drama
presentation.
2.6.2 Each team is responsible to coordinate lighting and special effects.

2.7 Demeanour
2.7.1 Participants should not portray indecent actions, excessive movements that are
proactive.
2.7.2 The presentation should take into account the comfort and safety of the audience
and actors.
2.8 Duration of Time
2.8.1 The allocated for each presentation is 20 minutes. Timing of the presentation
starts with the first movement, first word uttered by the actor(s) or any sound
effects.
2.9 Adjudication
2.9.1 There will be a panel of Three judges.
2.9.2 The team with majority of votes will be declared the winner.
2.9.3 The decision of the judges is final.
